TITfl MEDFOKD SITNT, OR EC! OK. "WEDNESDAY, JULY 1, 102'. 1 'WONDERFUL SPIRIT SANTA- BARBARA. Cal. -July 1.-0 (A. P.) Defiant in the fuce of dis aster which gripped their fair city on the Pacific's shores during the last 24 hours and left many of the beautiful homes and' business blocks t In earthquake ruins, the residents of Santa Barbara today 4egnn a pro gram of re-construction With the In domitable cheerful spirit of pioneers In a virgin land. - . Up Vnd down the fourteen blocks of State ' street, the" principal thor oughfare, which was laid waste by - "earth's temblor,; the sound of work men held sway. Their tune was to the crashing of gaunt walls crashing to the groinid to make way for the approaching builders, the clatter and buzz of hammer and saw. Grocery stores, produce houses and other business enterprises .whose shells had remained intact, reopened ' their doors todny with confidence. From them the residents were re turning to their homes, for the most part deserted for open lawns, with arms laden with - provisions. The jest of shop keepers with patron was in evidence everywhere. At the homes the housewives pre pared to Return the furniture to the )use whence If had been removed to the lawn at the firftt temblor. Everywhere the husband busied himself with hammer and saw to re store the family abode to Its former self. The musical scrape of the mason's trowel was also heard in the rebuilding of chimneys and fire places throughout the city. All the banks re-opened In tem porary quarters. 4 Fortune smiled with the beaming Jiin on J. W. Goorge, crippled vete ran of many quukes. He owns a Bmnll frame fruit stand on the edge of the stricken area. Ab he hobbled about to dispense his wares today he was glad the "quake didn't get the two upper stories of tht six foot stand." . . . New Meighan Feature Hunt's Craterian Thomas Meighan with Lila Lee as lending woman, makes "Old Home Week" at the Hunt's Craterian theater today and tomorrow a pretty' hard combination to beat. The film tells the story of a man who came home with a brass band in front of him and the sheriff behind. When he arrives In company with rich men everybody takes him for a winner. Ho is feted and dined and Amade ; a ifwssHOvpr.-ii.Thon 'the. .time rcomes.. when the whole framework of unintended deceit falls to tottering about Tom. Despised by all, even hie girl, he seeks to make good. Meighan has the type of role that he can play to perfection. For lovable humor, quaint philosophy, thrills and dramatic suspense, mingled with explosive laughter, "Old Home Week" Is hard to beat. Lfla Lee in the leading feminine role is more appealing than ever. Inci dentally this is Mins Lee's farewell ap pearance on the screen. Others in the cast are Charles Sellon, Max Figman, ' Larry Wheat. The usual Craterian short film and Betty Brown at the organ, completes tho program. Air Mail Thriller At Rialto Theatre Th once little thought of air mail, now pfoneorlng the way In commer cial aviation and demonstrating that It is practicable to operate cargo car rying planes on' Hchedulo time over vast distances, dny and -night, winter land summer, becomes a" screen thrll 'ler now playing at the Rialto theater in "The Atr Mall." Warner Baxter. Billlc Dove. Mary Brian and Douglas Fairbanks, Jr., have featured roles in the production. Scenes of the picture take place at a Sacramento and Reno, two. big sta tions along the air route0and in a "deserted city" where Billle Dove and her father,' .victims of a poor real entate deal,! llvo. Kane is forced down near BIMIo's home during a Btorm. Ho meets her, and from then on they are the very best of friends. Young Fairbanks furnishes a real thrill in the picture when he leaps from Baxter's lunging plane with the precious mail packet. Ben Turpln has even more tum bles and side-splitting antics than uftual in "The Raspberry Romance," a Mack Sennett comedy. There is a good news reel, and Peggy Ridley at the organ renders a musical Interpre tntion satisfying to the lovers of organ music ' -1 Milk nd Diet Forlnfantti invalid!, The Aged Nourishing --Digestible No Cooking.
