The surprising feature of the controversy is that the lenders in fnrvor of the School Hill, claimeil to he, anil many siucercly bcliev dl themselves to be, better Americans than those who opposed (he measure. It wus in the mime of 100 per cent Americanism Hint the meas ure wiis pussed in this state, and heard, was that of a return to the to the traditions of our forefathers. , But .the Supreme Court, by unanimous decision, held that the jiroponenls of the measure were attacking the principles of the constitution in which they professed so strongly to believe, and its opponents were in reality the defenders of those princiides of per sonal liberty upon which this government was founded. As The Mail Tribune pointed out at the time, there was and is a decided difference between favoring the public school Nystem and favoring the exclusion of every other system of education. The question became not one of education, but one of individual rights, whether the question of a child's education should be a matter of Mate authority or parental authority. The Supreme Court and the lower court decided that the parents comes first.'thaMhc state comes second; the parent has the supreme right to decide what type of education the child shall have; the state can not dictate the type, but them conform to a proper standard of education and Americanism. This decision is strictly in accord with the letter and the spirit tf the American constitution. The trouble with the proponents of the measure licing that they were not familiar with the letter of the document, and in their misunderstood zeal, had become alienated from its spirit of liberty and tolerance. QUILL The hard part is to reconcile policy. In the old days confession was a religious exercise, not litera ture. . . , Modernism : An unhappy agnostic ridiculing a' Christian who is happy. Hick complex : Let's not listen." A fSir-flung empire would he all tax money so far. ; Movie people like patrons who see a show several times if they don't do it at one sitting. fix . Another aid to longevity is utter lack of curiosity concerning how fast sho will go. More fights than usual arc hooked for June, gilism, not matrimony. It is hard to be a leader in America. You can't tell which way tho darned crowd is going. Americanism: Itescnting the other lawyer's sass; rejoicing when your lawyer sasses tho other side. The country is safe while most defeat of the home team. Warning: Von are more easily get out of breath while chasing it. An experienced tourist is one Ki-ound or a dumping ground. Soft drinks make fans less dangerous, perhaps; but another l-eed of tho times is soft pop bottles.' "Keducing your food consumption requires will power." if you've been trying to pick winners at the races. RipplingRhijinQS WEDDED W HEX ALGERNON I'P.IOIIN de Vere beseeehed tho dam sel for her hand, Jane she took a firm, determined stand. "I'd surely liko to bo your bride," she said, in accents low and sweet, "if you are willing to provide all things we wear and use and eat. For many years I've been a clerk in Boob A: Bulger's beeswax store, and I would gladly quit that work to be your own.- forevermore. But if I. quit that grievous task, which brings ine in some iron men, you mustn't plan to have me ask to get my old job back again. Too often in these modern days n damsel weds somo tinhorn gent, and then goes back to work to raise the coin he needs to pay the rent. Your little sunbeam I will be, and make your home a haven nice, if you will pledge yourself to me that I won't have to raise the price." "I fear that scheme would never do," said Algernon, with downcast dome; "it takes the salaries of two these modern days, to run home. I counted on your handsome wage to help us buy a motor ear, to patronize the helpful stage, and take us where the bright lights art1." "I may be preju diced." she said, and donned her enstlv snow-white lid, "I may be wrong but when I wed. I wish to do as mother did. She supervised our household jys. she cooked the meal nnd swept the stair, and traiue a family of buys with iSaidt'tia sandwiched here and there. She toiled around her quilting frame and went a-shopping ttrough the grad, and recked not whence the Ko pecks eame that sort of thing was up to dal." Whut Is There probably Is a great deal of truth in tho common notion that certain Individuals are more suscep tible to certain disease than other n d 1 v iduala and that a given indi vidual is more 3pjSBfc- tlme tlmn n0 ia i r'jr ttt anotnor ns 'or MtP)m instance, when his general health has been impaired by bad hygiene. The attribute or- characteristic on which this variable degree of sus ceptibility or Immunity depends is usually called resistance, and while students of pathology and physicians give the question of resistance much consideration in dealing with all of the infectious germ, diseases, the laity hears little 'about resistance except in reference to those Infections or germ diseases which even the old fogy health of flows and. the old-fashioned doctors nor admit are what they really mean when they speak of "common colds." The theory of "lowered resistance' rests upon exceedingly poor ground, we find when we come to examine the foundations. It Is a curious cir cumstance that tho respiratory infec tlon resistance to - -which we can scientifically determine and measure, by means of the Schick test, is never attributed do exposure to cold or wet any more. The best scien Timely Views on World Topics "King Alfonso Homo Made. Holy War of Mooor Conflict," Says 1 banes. Dlasco Ibanez has Just published an other pamphlet discussing "What the Spanish Republic Will Be," and an swers supporters of King Alfonso, who have said that the novelist, who is au thor of the "Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse." wants a republic in Spain to satisfy his ambi tion to occupy its highest office. "Those who know me," Ibanex writes in the pamphlet published by his American represen t a 1 1 v e s, "cannot lend credence to such suppositions. I desire a republic horniiRA f nm more PHASCoieNEz. of a Spaniard than Alfonso XIII. I am disposed to do whatever lies in my power In order ihat Spain may be freed of royalty: but once the republic has triumphed I desire to see new men joining with the older patriots to govern tho young re public, and I shall be glad to be left to one side to enjoy In silence the mor al satisfaction of having accomplished a great task for the good of my coun try. It would not be fitting, however, that I should abandon the republic in the first movement of its triumph. I wiii serve long as the republic needs me and In whatever capacity she de sires." 'Again Assails Regime In the earlier assault on the king Ihanex had charged that Alfonso pro voked the war in Africa in order to pone as a Napoleon before the Spanish people. I bane i said that when the Spanish arms failed Alfonso conspired to accomplish the coup d'etat of Primo de Hi vera, thus preventing an investi gation. As a result Ibanex war 'con victed of treason in Spain, and efforts were made to prosecute him in France, where he was living. In the pamphlet issued now he discusses again the war against the Moors. '"Mtguellto A? Jere,'the grand cap tain of Alfonso's regime." he says, "has Invented a new kind of tactics. Is Pasteur's classical experiments with anthrax Briefly Pasteur con ceived the idea that the tempera ture of fowls, which is several de grees higher than that of mammals, might be unfavorable to the de velopment of anthrax bacilli. Fowls are immuno to anthrax, which is ex ceedingly fatal to sheep. Accordingly Pasteur immersed a ben in a cold I bath in order to lower the hen's temperature with a culture of an thrax germs. . The hen died next day of anthrax her blood and organs were full of the germs. This experi ment was repeated many times, al- j ways with tho same result. Then j Pasteur inoculated other hens with the germs but without subjecting the .hens to the cold bath; none of theso hens developed the disease. Critics asserted that the cold bath not the germs, had killed the hens, so Pasteur subjected some more hens to the cold bath without inoculating them and these hens Avere mean enough to remain' perfectly well. Finally, Pasteur clinched his case be yond possibility of doubt by inocu lating a hen and then keeping the hen in the cold bath untii she de veloped symptoms of anthrax, whero upnn she was taken out of the cold bath, dried, wrapped with cotton , wool and kept In a box or coop! which was kept heated to about. 95 degreea Fahrenheit, and the r hen. soon made a complete recovery.
