Miss Joyce Wethored retained the British ladies' open golf championship title today hy beating Miss Cecil Leltch at the 37th hole in a hard fought match that was all qua re at the end of the first round and again at the end of the second. Mlsa We the red won the championship in 1922 and again last year. The Wethered-Leitch match was perhaps the greatest and the hardest fought finals in the history of the British women's championship plays. Certainly this was the case lit the lat ter stages of the match. It was watched by the largest gallery that ever saw women play golf In I-furnpo. Miss Leltch squared the match on th)i) 36th' green after being faced with a dormie two only to olse It by one putt at the thirty-seventh bole. Bo well did Miss Leltch play against her opponent that It was not until the 28th hole that Miss Wethored found herself In front. Just as Miss Glenna Cotlett, the American ex champion falteied In rounding the turn with Miss Wethered here two days ago. so Miss Leltch weakened to day. She pulled her second to the '28th hole and became one down. Then at the 30th she flubbed her drive and the two shots that followed, so that she had played four before Miss Wethered hit her second, to- The match wiih m 30 holes. Miss wethered was three down ut the elev enth, but played- the remaining holes of the first eighteen under an average of fours and evened the match at the home hole by dropping a ten-yard putt for a birdie three. The gallery following tho match was almost as large as that for Wed nesday's battle between Miss Weth ered und Glenna Collott, the American star. - The cards: , ' Out: are ' visiting Tony's old home was Jjon ; never more beautiful than now. the Evelyn Brent has just' been notified that she has been left a legacy of 100 pounds English money by . the will of the late William Hempstead, "ncone shifter at a Man chester theater where Evelyn once played in stock.
