o o o o o MEDFORD MAT I J TRTRTTNE, MCTFOCT, OT?EnOT, -TUESDAY, AfAY tf. 1025 .raoHs tiiree:;, CRATERS FROUCm PROSPECT FEAST AND DANCE Another Joyful event will bo writ ten Into the annalH of. the Crater oltib and again old man Gloom suffered defeat at the hands of the Medfoi-d boosters. ; One hundred and j fifty hungry, happy . Craters, Lady' Craters and guests twice filled, to overflowing the dining room of the Prospect hotel last night and enjoyed the generous hospi t tality of Jim Grieve and the tasty P chicken,' mashed potatoes and straw berries fierved by "Ma" Grieve. They started to' arrive at noon time and, by the time the gong sounded for the first round at the dinner table the ' Craters had completely captured Prospect park. "Dinner" was the first' big event of tho evening for dinner at Jim's hotel is always a big affair. Then camo the main feature of the evening's .program. When all were seated in the dance pavilion, adjoining the' hotel, Alco holujt the Miracle Alan was presented by- "Ten g" Tengwoldwho made the assertion that "Alcoholus would an swer any and all questions." And Mr. Alcoholus, though quiet and un assuming, did not disclaim this state-, ment but proceeded to do the Impos sible. With uncanny and super natural ability he answered scores of questions ranging from a request from Abe Cunningham to know "Why the women were so crazy about him" to "Does Wlnnio Crowson walk In his sleep" signed by the. "other lady In the tent." Borne of the Craters say that Alcoholus was no other person than Alburtus, others say Alexander, r stilt others recognized tho affable Robert H, Boyl, secretary of the Bed ford Chamber of Commerce. Anyway, whoever Alcoholus was, he was clever and certainly pocked a lot of joy Into last night's frivolities. At the wlndup of Alcoholus' seance the Craters' eight-piece orchestra lim bered up on a snappy foxtrot about the "caretaker's daughter" and the crowd did a little limbering up on their o'wn' part. After a few dances 0 the Crater quartet consisting of Larry Mann, "Boldy" Allen, Don Newbury and "Spike" Dawson presented their repertoire. The. Craters and guests then danced 'till the sun began to peep from the pine clad hills east of Prospect and Jim started out to milk the cows. It was a grand party well up to the standard of ''Ladies Night," Cra ter eruptions of past years, and today Med ford's busy business men are walking the streets with tired steps. E. E. Morton, of Morton & Morton Mills, met with injury Monduy after noon while engaged in dismantling the flour mill at Central Point pre paratory to moving it to this city. He was standing on one of the supports of the. second floor when suddenly without warning it gave way causing him to fall to the ground over twenty feet beneath. In his descent he struck a .truck loaded with lumber. This tended to break his fall to such an. extent that he miruculously escaped death. Doctor lleckman was immediately summoned; ho pro nounced the unfortunate man not seriously hurt. Mr. Morton was lacer ated on the scalp so badly that sev eral stitches were necessary. At pres ent he is renting cosy, although he had a very restless night. LEGION ENDOWMENT iS i . It is also planned that an employment office will be opened during the three months of picking, August,- Septem ber and October for the benefit of the migratory workers. AT IT PORTLAND, Ore..' May ID. Fed eral Judge C. K. 1 Bean this morn ing overruled the motion of Horace Greely Wilson of Roseburg, former Klamath Indian agent, for a third postponement of his trial on charges of violating the Mann act. Wilson askod a further delay of six months. "This appeal coming on the eve of trial comes too late," declared Judge Bean. "The fact that the defendant is without money is no ground for postponing a criminal trial. If this ground would be upheld, it would not he long until this excuse would be used to postpono every criminal trial that is set." Judge Bean stated that the case had already beon postponed several times upon the request of the defen dant, and that "there is no assurance that he will be any more ready for trial at the end of six months than he Is today." Wilson offered nn affidavit that averred he had tried to sell his land in order to get money for his defense that he had been unable to do so, that his first attorney had quit and that his present counsel, L. B. Sand blast of Portland, had only had the case a few days, that he could not bring witnesses here to combat the first three counts In the indictment and that it would bo necessary for him to have six months In order to prepare the defense. In replying Assistant United States Attorney Joseph Stearns declared: "The government has shown the defendant every consideration. But I have it on most excellent authority that M r. Wilson openly boasted on the streets of his homo In Roseburg that this case would never come to trial. 1 have been informed that dur ing the time he was supposed to be traveling about getting hi3 witnesses and trying to sell his property he was playing cards In the club in Rose burg." Stearns said the government has spent more than $5000 bringing wit nesses here from Washington, New York, Chicago, Minneapolis, Los An geles and other places. Orpheum Jr. Advanced Vaudeville at Hunt's Craterlan this afternoon and evening offers a wide range of enter? tertainment, centering in music, with a different number in a ventriloquist and impersonating number. Maxfield and Stone, sing popular songs and comedy blue tunes of late vintage, mixed with lively patter and piano playing. Both possess voices of wide range and above the average in sweetness. t Two of tho cteverest colored vaude ville performers before the public are seen in Austin and Delaney, in "Tho Syncopated Hotel." Both are natural comedians, and sing and .dance and make wise cracks. They portray a pah of bellhops, one the dapper, type and the other the lazy style. Their imitation , of a jazz band is clever and unusual. Ventriloquism will bo presented by Dave Rafael and company. Miss Vera Welton, a clever and widely, known impersonator assists. Five mechanir cal figures, are used to carry a high powered monologue. Special electri cal and scenic effects heighten the act. ' Maxwell Field company In "Melody and Rhythm," introduce late songs, and did time, modern and eccentric dances with interpretations, besides harmonizing popular songs.
