IF THE gulroud report from Yreka today is verific ford'u dream of a railroad connection with the co become a reality. According to this report, part road men, the .Southern Pacific, aroused by the sudden activity of 1 he Hill lines hi Kastern Oregon, has decided to build a railroad down the Klamath Oliver from Ilornbrook, connecting by the east with the Modoc Northern, and on the west with the Northwestern rucifie, So many railroad rumors have been broadcasted in the past and "'never materialized, that one is fifficinllv Authorized with a L'rain . . . it-port is true or not, there is no faces a period of railroad activity, Next year the Natron Cut-off will be completed. Strahorn is pushing his railroad development to a successful conclusion, ana now the Oregon Trunk, supported by the Great Northern and Nor thern Pacific, has decided to realize the long-deferred dream of Jim Kill, and secure a rail connection with San Francisco from the north. "While in none of these projects will Bedford and Jackson county figure as vital factors, the Rogue leading beneficiaries. For Medford is the permanent distributing center, and commer cial hub of this part of the state. The more the klamath region and the Klamath River territory is developed, the greater Medford 's market and the greater Medford 's growth. More development east and west of this district, means more people and more people mean more mouths to feed, and by the ad vantages of soil and climate, the Rogue River valley must be the oread basket of this Klamath River belt. So, in this good fortune of her neighbors, assured and projected, Medford and Jackson county will find even better fortune for them selves. This railroad expansin, after so many years of inaction only adds more evidence, and unexpected evidence, that this part of the slate faces the most prosperous era of development in its history. "The recent dif ficulties of the French and Ger man governments to keep ministries in power long enough! to accom plish any results have now been capped by inabili ties to even form ministries. "In our own two-party system there 'will always be clamorous minorities who say that our government is not responsive. I,ook back on the last 10 years, and ask yourself what reforms which have proved worthy have not been put into effect. We get our way in America under the two party sys tem, nnd that way in the end is the will of the majority. "But, in Europe, where many mi norities are organized Into parties, not only does tho minority fail to get its way, but the majority the tax-paying, worthy citizenry fails also to get its way or to havetronsistent administra tion, or oven to have a government which will carry on decently. Says Majority Pays "Sometimes the organized minorities obtain something. Who pays for what they get? The majority pays. Then another organized minority blackmails the government and perhaps gets something. The platter Is passed un til there is nothing left on It and then government breaks' down. The ma jority pays and pays and pays all the way along. "In all democmcles of the world the organized minority Is the menace of democracy. The organized minority always presents its claim under the banner of benevolence, humanity, goodness, kindness and virtue. But it is the majority man who pays through the nose for all of It. William Brady, Ir ?ar of trill nawapapar. The Cause of In order to avoid misunderstand ing, let us tnke off from this substan tial fact: It never hurts to grow. Even when growth becomes so exces sive as to amount to a disease (for instance, in the con d i 1 1 o n physicians know as gigantism), the 'enormous growth is not pain ful. To call the aches and pains which some children complain of "grow ing pains'- is there fore a mistake, quite as Inexcusable as it fs to ascribe some vague disturbance of health or undiag nosed disease to one's age. ..As for that, the truth" of tho ' matter is that children who actually grow the most rapidly are least likely to complain of these pains In the legs or arms, the majority of youngsters who suffer with "growing pains' being some what retarded in growth. This is rather to be expected, for tho pains are in reality an expression of a dis ease condition which impairs nutri tion and handicaps growth. In the few cases in children two or three years old these pains are caused by rickets. This Is a nutritional dis order involving tho whole system and not just the bones, and its prevention and cure call for (1) exposure of the skim to sunlight as much as possible, (2) sufficient exorcise, and (3) unde naturlzed food, that is, food which has not been robbed of its mineral con tent or its vitamins by processes of manufacture, refinement, preparation or preservation. From 10 to 20 drops of cod liver oil two or three times a day may be given tho child with any indication of rickets, as an effective way to supply the important fat sol uble vitamin A. ' Plain cod liver oil in this way is a good remedy for these "growing pains." Any complaint of such pains by a child should lead to a careful exam ination of the child's heart by the physician. In some cases the vague recurring pains are the only outward Indication of a low grade of tonsil in fection which becomes the septic fo cus or source of that low grade septi cemia or systemic infection popularly known as "rheumatism, " and this type of infection seems to have a spe cial affinity for the endothelial tis sue or serous membrane which lines tho joints and the heart In such low grade septicemic Infections involv mont of a heart- valve is as likely to happen as lameness or Inflammation iny any of the joints, and is ordinarily a painless incident, often not suspected by the parents and perhaps not even brought to the attention of the phys ician unless by chance later in life. In a Vonsiderable share of all cases of valvular heart disease the damage is not recogniezd until long after its occurrence. Any child with "growing pains" and tonsils and adenoids which are dis eased or infected in tho Judgment of the physician should be operated on without dallying or quibbling about fancied dangers of the operation or imaginary evils which come from the loss of these vestiges of useful organs. Although nearly any k mall order or short cut healer in quest of patronage can suggest hypothetical uses or func tions for the tonsijs or the adenoid body In the human economy, no one who has any actual scientific know HOUSE CLEANING i TIME . j Mattresses Made Over Furniture Upholstered 30-3, N. Some people argue that strenuous exercises tend to strengthen the mus cles and make a person fat, and I am taking exercises morning andevening to reduce. Please straighten me out on this question, as I certainly do not wish to got fatter. (Audrey.) Answer. Frail underdeveloped youths may gain some weight by means of general exercise.
