RAILROAD DEVELOPMENT MEAlffe PROSPERITY.
IF THE gulroud report from Yreka today is verific
ford'u dream of a railroad connection with the co
become a reality.
According to this report, part
road men, the .Southern Pacific, aroused by the sudden activity of
1 he Hill lines hi Kastern Oregon, has decided to build a railroad
down the Klamath Oliver from Ilornbrook, connecting by the east
with the Modoc Northern, and on the west with the Northwestern
rucifie,
So many railroad rumors have been broadcasted in the past and
"'never materialized, that one is

it-port is true or not, there is no
faces a period of railroad activity,
Next year the Natron Cut-off will be completed. Strahorn is
pushing his railroad development to a successful conclusion, ana
now the Oregon Trunk, supported by the Great Northern and Nor
thern Pacific, has decided to realize the long-deferred dream of Jim
Kill, and secure a rail connection with San Francisco from the
north.
"While in none of these projects will Bedford and Jackson county
figure as vital factors, the Rogue
leading beneficiaries.
For Medford is the permanent distributing center, and commer
cial hub of this part of the state. The more the klamath region
and the Klamath River territory is developed, the greater Medford 's
market and the greater Medford 's growth.
More development east and west of this district, means more
people and more people mean more mouths to feed, and by the ad
vantages of soil and climate, the Rogue River valley must be the
oread basket of this Klamath River belt.
So, in this good fortune of her neighbors, assured and projected,
Medford and Jackson county will find even better fortune for them
selves. This railroad expansin, after so many years of inaction only
adds more evidence, and unexpected evidence, that this part of
the slate faces the most prosperous era of development in its history.

Colonel Stewart isa man of massive
physique. He is an interesting figuro
becauso he represents among other
things a new trend. He is the law
yer in industry. One hears much from
time to time of the oil-driler or rigger
or prospector who comes to hoad
great petroleum combine. But Bob
Stewart, up to tho time he became
head of the colossal Standard Oil ot
Indiana, had never had a day of prac
tical oil experience.
Colonel Bob went with the Standard
OH of Indiana ns general counsel. He
was imported from South Dakota to
Chicago for the job. That was as re
cent as 11)15. Three years later the
lawyer from the " plains was mado
chairman of the board.
Born in Iowa. tSewarf wen to South
Dakota to fight for success in the new
country. He went via tho law school
of Yale University after having first
been graduated from Coe College in
his native state. Ho was struggling
along at the law out In Dakota when
the Spanish war happened along. 1 1
also happened that Leonard Wood
and Theodore lioosevelt were organ

That suited Boh Stewart down to the
ground. 1 U enlisted as a private.
When the war was over Stewart wa

preside over the national guard of
the state. That is when he got his ti

ever since.
While out In Dakota Colonel Stewart
served as state's attorney, as supreme

slate senate.
His law business prospered. Many

The Cause of
In order to avoid misunderstand
ing, let us tnke off from this substan
tial fact: It never hurts to grow.
Even when growth becomes so exces
sive as to amount to a disease (for
instance, in the con
d i 1 1 o n physicians
know as gigantism),
the 'enormous
growth is not pain
ful. To call the
aches and pains
which some children
complain of "grow
ing pains'- is there
fore a mistake, quite
as Inexcusable as it
fs to ascribe some
vague disturbance of
health or undiag
nosed disease to one's age. ..As for
that, the truth" of tho ' matter is that
children who actually grow the most
rapidly are least likely to complain
of these pains In the legs or arms, the
majority of youngsters who suffer
with "growing pains' being some
what retarded in growth. This is
rather to be expected, for tho pains
are in reality an expression of a dis
ease condition which impairs nutri
tion and handicaps growth.
In the few cases in children two or
three years old these pains are caused
by rickets. This Is a nutritional dis
order involving tho whole system and
not just the bones, and its prevention
and cure call for (1) exposure of the
skim to sunlight as much as possible,
(2) sufficient exorcise, and (3) unde
naturlzed food, that is, food which has
not been robbed of its mineral con
tent or its vitamins by processes of
manufacture, refinement, preparation
or preservation. From 10 to 20 drops
of cod liver oil two or three times a
day may be given tho child with any
indication of rickets, as an effective
way to supply the important fat sol
uble vitamin A. '
Plain cod liver oil in this way is a
good remedy for these "growing
pains."
Any complaint of such pains by a
child should lead to a careful exam
ination of the child's heart by the
physician. In some cases the vague
recurring pains are the only outward

a painless incident, often not suspected
by the parents and perhaps not even
brought to the attention of the phys
ician unless by chance later in life.
In a Vonsiderable share of all cases
of valvular heart disease the damage
is not recogniezd until long after its
occurrence.

Some people argue that strenuous
exercises tend to strengthen the mus
