FOR PLAYGROUND
The weekly meeting of the Kiwanls
club deviated from its usual proced
ure of having a speaker and Instead
resorted to a novel scheme of calling
on each member present for a one
minute talk telling of his life history
or as much of it as he could In the
allotted time. Suffice to say the time
was quite Insufficient and much that
could have been said was unsaid.
Vernon Vawter gave a very inter
esting account of the recent visit of
j the club to Roseburg, informed tho
k members present that a royal good
r time was had and that in the near
future the Roseburg club will visit
Med ford and take charge of the entire
program.
A committee was appointed to
meet with the Parent-Teachers asso
ciation to assist in formulating a plan
whereby Med ford may receive assis
tance from the American Play Ground
association in securing a much need
ed centralized play ground for the
' children.
Paul McDonald made a report on
the. plans for the annual dinner dance
which this year will be given at the
Jackson Hot Springs, on Wednesday
evening, May 6th. It is expected that
one hundred and fifty Khvanians and
their wives-will be in attendance at
this party, and Invitations have been
extended to the Kiwanls clubs at
Klamath Falls, Ashland, and Rose
burg to attend.
The club also went on record as
favoring the proposed bond issue for
i a new high school, and a petition
circulated among the, members was
signed by every member present.
(The club also voted to stand the
expense of hospital aid In a case of a
young school boy, whose parents nro
unable to' give this need of attention.
Klwanian Dr. Robert W. Stearns also
agreed to give this child the needed
medical attention.
J It was reported that at the recent
election of board of directors, of the
Medford Chamber of Commerco seven
qf the Kiwanls club had been success
ful in being elected.

.Captain and Mrs. Allen Pitt, who
are in charge of the local corps, are
entering into the fourth month of
their stay In Medford, and things are
shaping well under their administra
tion. The Army has done better and
more efficient service In the commu
nity since taking occupancy of its pres
ent building, at 4th and Bartlett
streets, where the religious and relief
work Is enrried on day after day.
By special request Mr. and Mrs. J.
H. Shearer, the noted organist and
soprano soloist, will give an organ and
voice concert Thursday evening at the
First Baptist church. One admirer of
these noted artists told the music com
mittee of this church that- she would
dispose of twenty-five tickets if they
would put on this concert. The "ex
pression at the concert Sunduy was so
strong for their return that it was
felt that many others in uddition to
those present would desire to hear
Mr. and Mrs. Shearer In another type
o fentertainment. Hare is it that Med
ford has the privilege of hearing the
organ played by such an artist. Mrs.
Shearer captivates all hearers by her
sweet and melodious songs.- Tickets
can be obtained at Marsh's grocery
store or from Mrs. Elmer Wilson and
others.

At the same hour as the funeral
service for Dr. E. E. Gilbert at Salem
tomorrow afternoon at 2:30, a me
morial service will be held In the
First Methodist church, where he had
been pastor for the past half year.
The membership of the church to
which he ministered before his Illness
were much pleased with the announce
ment that such a memorial would be
conducted. The Medford Ministerial
association will have charge of the
memorial and brief statements will be
made by some of tho pastors and lay
men, but no sermon will be preached.
It has seemed to his many friends
and the congregation to which he
ministered, a most fitting thing that a
memorial be held Inasmuch as no
funeral address would be given at the
brief Borvice at the parlor this after
noon. .
The program for the memorial serv
ice will include a musical number and
four brief addresses, as follows: "Dr.
Gilbert The Man," by Rev. D. J.
Howe; "Dr. Gilbert His Ministry,"
by Rev. J. V.'. DeYoe; "Dr. Gilbert A
Fellow Minister," by Rev. B. P. Law
rence, and "Dr. Gilbert Our Pastor,"
by Miss May Phipps; prayer by Rev.
F. M. Leach; scripture by Rev. King;

The regular meeting of the Rogue
valley ministers was held yesterday
In the Ashland Congregational church.
Pastors from all parts of the valley
were in attendance And a most enjoy
able session was held. All the Med
ford ministers except two were pres
ent. Luncheon was provided at the
Ashland hotel, where the ministers
were greeted by Governor Pierce and
members of the Normal school board
of regents. ; i
An Interesting part of the program
was a paper and book review given
by Rev. B. P. Lawrence of Medford,
followed by a lively discussion by the
assembled pastors. A splendid state
ment and tribute was made relative to
Rev. F. R. Leach of the First Baptist
church of Medford, occasioned by his
resignation here and his acceptance
of a pastorate at Bremerton.
The death of . Dr. E. B. Gilbert was
the occasion of a memorial by the
organization in which he was a mem
ber. A letter of sympathy was sent
to his family and a large floral tribute
ordered to accompany his remains to
Salem. '
The next session of the association
will be an outing on the river in .June.
