And people talk of silly books as though they were of weight and worth; reviewers, in their gilded nooks, discuss all novels on this earth. Sra Food Is Health Food More than half nf th hieh school fstudentH in some of our inland cities nave been round to have simple goitre. (Jt f c i jf 1 a r g e d neck" goitre. A teacher or or school nurse is not competent to determine whether an undue fullness or enlargement of the heck is goitre, nor is ny one other than a physician compe tent to decide in a given case in child or adult whether a goitre is a simple goitre or a more serious condition. The iodin treat ment which Is so much employed at present on a mass scale for the pre vention of goitre among school chil dren in the inland cities and so com monly resorted to by way of home treatment for simple goitre which l already present, may do no harm in case the goitre happens to be of the exophthalmic or "toxic" type, though the time lost while trifling with lodtn In such a case is a serious handicap which is likely to retard ultimate re covery. Further. If the goitre Is of thee ystic type Iodin- Is quite useless and nothing but surgery can be of avail, though fortunately in this third type of goitre the unstghtliness of the enlarged neck is the main and often i the only symptom. j We have urged the more frequent j use of food in the dietary as a I natural means of supplying iodin j which the body requires for perfect; health. Perhaps all Iodin comes orig-j inally from the sea. and in nature nearly all of It eventually returns to the sea. Much of the iodin (old spell-; ing was Iodine) of commerce has been: made from sea weed. In the past, the analyses of various chemises have dif- fered as to the amount of iodin pres-i ent In sea ftshea. mollufks and crusta- j ccans, and hence there has been some; doubt about the importance or value! of sea food as a source of iodin. But : these discrepancies were probably due: to imperfect or inaccurate methods, i More recent chemical studies have! established the superiority in iodin-j c ontent of these itema, in the rtJetary. QUESTION'S AND ANSWERS. The Fallen Stomach. Kindly give the symptoms of fallen stomach in the newspaper. Also the symptoms of autointoxication. A. D. R. Answer That would be bad news which we never knowingly give. A lot of us who happen to have a low down stomach, but are still quite happy would be likely to go around with lugubrious faces and see the dark side of everything which now looks reasonably bright to us. As for autointoxication, there's something in that all right, and the chief symptoms seem to be (1) an irresistible impulse to extend the left arm when making a left turn into one's pew from the aisle; (2) steadily increasing girth rate.) , - , Never m Nose Satisfactory. Some time ago I wrote asking ad vice about the patented nose shaper by a reliable physician, but to date have never seen an answer. Miss A. M. B. Will fumigating candles kill the eggs also? Mrs. M. T. A. COMMUNICATIONS Need New Building To the Editor: Who is there that made the trip to Roseburg to see our boys win the championship for south ern Oregon, that did not return with a heavy heart? It was a great game and a great victory and we were proud of our boys and girls, both of whom had brought glory to us and had added lustre to Medford's reputation for doing things well. Vet our hearts were heavy and we felt resentment be cause we were .compelled to bring these fine young people back to the rickety old place known as the Med ford high school.- This is our story and we tell it for the benefit of those stumbling blocks who have so long prevented the build ing of a suitable high school in keep ing with Medford's needs, and spirit and Ideals. .The game at Roseburg. In spite of its importance, and over the protest of our Medford coach, was played in the high school gymnasium instead of in their armory where it should have been played. They havei a fine high school building and j the. "gym" floor, nodoubu' is-adequate - to the ordinary needs of their school work outs. When marked for basketball, however, it was bounded on the two ends by high walls and became haz ardous in the extreme, where such fast play was Indulged in. It was natural, therefore, that. every onlooker from Medford, who had'. been . accus tomed to seeing the games at our armory (where. there is some territory outside' the lines) should have fet a sickening, fear as they watched our players hurl themselves with such force and speed toward those terrible walls. .MB.riy were the -expressions of fear, only to be met by' such imperti nent retorts from, the Roseburg stu dents as the following, "You'd better shut up. L. Medford hasn't got any high school," or "Medford has the rottenest hole in Vie state for a high school. You never saw a gym before." Is it ally wonder that we 'felt pity for thesa splendid, deserving young people from Medford who had done so much fof us and for whom we had done so little? The men and women who go serenely about' their business each day, with the mantle of this dis grace wrapped snugly about them, enjoying Medford's prosperity and forgetting this greatest need of all had brought these insultsupon their boys and girls." - " . .-s . Even if roomy enough, the present building Is not suitable for high school purposes It is faulty In lighting and ventilating facilities. Those on whom we depend for the future of our com monwealth are sent in. strong in mind and body, and we are shocked and grieved to note the large percentage who come out bespectacled, with poor skins and poorer nervous systems. Let us not longer subject our boys and-girls to insult and ridicule in addition to impairing their health and retarding their best growth and development- The high school situation for -many' years has been a Ugrace. It Is now intolerable' yes, ttb criminal.
