CHICAGO. Feb. 29. The movie has
yet to prove Its effectiveness as a
teacher of youth. Judging by opinions
expressed today by speakers before
the department of superintendence of
the National Education association.
The American boy and girl misleads
many educators by Bhowlng an intense
interest In entertaining motion pic
tures. Let the object of the movie be
education' and the youngster is likely
to doze. Prank N. Freeman, professor
of psychology of the University of
Chicago, advised the meeting.
"The value of motion pictures," Pro
fessor Freeman Bald, "lies more in the
peculiar content of the experiments
which they make possible than in their
stimulating effect upon the child's interest."
A. W. Abrams, director of visual edu
cation in New York, expressed much
the same view.
Public schools have the job of malt
ing good citizens out of 25.000,000
American youths and 13,000.000 aliens.
Superintendent Fred M. Hunter of
Oakland, Cal., told the convention. An
army of 750.000 teachers Is at work
on the task, he said.
'Money for schools Is money Invest
ed; mgney for roads and public build
ings Is money expended," declared E.
W. Buttertield, state commissioner of
education for New Hampshire.
'Schools," he said, "are maintained
by public taxation, as are highways,
public buildings, police and fire pro
tectlon. From all the rest, schools are
by nature separate. They never should
lie supported from the same mwgei,
administered by the same officers or
joined in the public mind when support
is sought.

overcomes all obstacles and returns
first."
Colonel Broome will sail Thursday
from Vancouver, B. C, on tho steam
ship Thiepval with petrol and oil for
the British airplane. Sealed cases of
rations sufficient, for four men for
ten days, will be placed along' the
Alaskan coast, on the Aleutian Islands
the Siberian coast lino and tho Jurlles
islnmls. The exact locations will be
established at the following points:
Vancouvor, Bella Bella, B. C:- Fort
Wrangell, Yakutat, Cordova, Alaska
Port Chatham, Chlgnlk, Dutch Har
bor, Kazan bay, Chapel cove, on Adak
island, Klsskn harbor, Chlcagoff har

Erto to the most rigorous tests.
The examiners declared that Erto,
when placed In a darkened room, ap
pears to be surrounded by a kind of
halo, while every now ana men
clearly defined fan-shaped ray of
light is projected from the left side.
Occasionally also, a cone of light ap
pears above the head.

IS FOUND GUILTY
PORTLAND, Ore., Feb. 28. A ver
diet of guilty on all three counts of
the Indictment, charging possession
and sale of liquor and the mainten
ance of a nuisance, was returned by
the jury here today In the trial of
Anthony Tully, owner of the Old
Homestead Inn near here, before Fed
cral Judge Wolverton. Tully was
granted twenty days in which to ap
peal his case.
; Tully's conviction follows closely
the conviction and Jail sentence of
Fred Merrill, owner of tho Plantation
Inn on a. similar charge,

Temple of tho Golden Calf, mentioned
in the Old Testament, has been found
by the Joint expedition of tho Unlvor
sity of Pennsylvania museum and the
British museum near Ur of the Chal-
dees. Dr. George B. Gordon, director
of the university museum believes. He
expressed the belief today that Nebu
chadnezzar's temple, which the expe
dltlon has uncovered, la identical with
the golden calf temple. .

rifle speed attained seemed disproved
today by Corporat e. KuRone Conrad
of Kelly Field, who now holds the
southern record for. .parachute Jump
ing as a result of successfully de
scending from an airplane at an alti
tude of 21,600 feet here yosterday.
Conrad retained consciousness in f
drop of 1100 feet from the plane be
fore his parachute opened and count
ed the seconds and when eight had
elapsed pulled the cord which opened
the parachute. Less than 25 minutes-
later, he landed safely.
It was not equipped -with a super
charger and thus established a record
in altitude for a regulation army
plane.

file of hogs around the world at the
equator and a single unbroken line
from the north pole to tho southern
end of south America, is the graphic
picture presented by the department
of agriculture of America's slaughter
of pork last year. Tho department
statisticians calculate the 81,530,600
hogs killed for consumption would
reach 61,770 miles if placed end on
end. allowing four fcot for each hog.
The same number, they add. if placed
21 abreast would form a bristling lane
from New York to San Francisco.
