To support this contention they point to the unsold bonds votjeit by the people, the promise of state and federal aid, and the petition K.gncd by 1500 names.' , Now with 0000 registered1 voters in the county a petition signed by 3500 names, signifies nothing at all, as far ns public opinion is oon corned, particularly Vhcn from every part of the county, comes the word from many who signed that thoy wished they had not signed. ' , But for the sake of argument, let's admit that more people lufve told the county court to build the pavement, than have told thc.courj ty court not to build, in other words that there is a powerful minor ity behind the project, while the majority of the people are either inar ticulate or indifferent. , , ' ,' . , What does this mean? It means that as long as the majority of the tax payers yield to minority demands, and as long as our officials who control expenditures yield to them, we might as well abandon : this talk of lower taxes, it's as useless as trying to brush back the lusing tide with a broom. .' The Mail Tribune has opposed this Medford-Uuch pavement, be cause it 'believes a pavement to Rueh is no more needed than a .pave ment to Unite rails or liiikc Ureek things, but all from the stand point of economy, a waste of the Uix payer's money. A good macadam road, well maintained, is needed, and this the district has. This is not our view alone, it is the view- of the stalo highway engineer, it is tho view of the former state high way engineer, it is the view of the U. S. bureau of public roads. ' A paved highway is only justified where the traffic is so excessive, t lint a tiiacadani road will break down, that is where the average tra.yel is about 600 vehicles per day. But the county court is determined to build this pavement, ap parently, and there is no legal way to stop them. Fifteen hundred people have signed a petition demanding it, and 7500 people, more or less, have said nothing. ., So there you are. I do not think pneumonia has a particular bearing on tho ques tion.
