HIGH HONORS IN
The first open session of the Med
ford Troops of Boy Scouts held Satur
day night was In every respect a huge
success Tlioso who had the pleasure
of witnessing the tournament betwoon
the troops wore well entertained and
nil were enthusiastic as to tho splen
did showing which the new scout or
ganization la making.
That each of tho seven troops are
working hard Is evidenced by the
number of boys which each presented
as having qualified in the Tenderfoot
examinations. About fifty are now eli
gible to receive the investure Initia
tion Into this first degree of scout
craft. About half the troopB present
ed scouts who have qualified In the
second class work and these will be
given their awards at the first sitting
of the court of honor, n body of mem
bers from, the local council who ex
amine all qualifying scouts above tho
Tenderfoot rank.
All the events of the tournamont
wont off as scheduled with a flno
spirit of competitive enthusiasm pre
vailing. Tho first sovon ovents wore
based upon tho acqulrment of speed
and accuracy, the last three Uon skill
and endurance. Troop No. 5 carried
off high honors with a total of 100
points; Troops No. 2 and No. 1 tied
for second place with 57V4 points ouch,
while Troop No. 4 carries oft third
place with 40. points.
The events wero scheduled, as fol
lows: Rope tlolng contest, eight spec
ified knots, Troop 4 first; 'Troop G sec
ond, Troop 0 third. Tlmo 1:17.' Troop
2 mnde the tluio in 1:02, but was dis
qualified as one knot was Inaccurate.
Message relay: Five man entry
Troop 4 first, Troop 7 second, Troop
6 third. Time 8 seconds.
Paul Revere Relay, one rider and
four horses Troop C first, Troops 1,
2, 4 and 7 tied for second. Troop f
third. Time 10 seconds.

sion by President Coolidgo of tho nom
inations of Frederick I. Thompson of
Mobile, Ala., and Bert E. Haney of
Portland, Oro., as members of the
shipping board, was Indicated today af
ter Senators McNary and Stanfteld,
republicans, Oregon, had conferred
with the exocutlve on the shipping
board question.
The nominations which were for-
warded to tho sonate at the opening of
the sosslon and were approved by the
senate commerce 'committee,' were
withdrawn by (lie president last week
after the committee had voted to re
port adversely on the nomination of
lOilwnrd P. Fnrley of Chicago, now
chairman of the board.
The president was described as
withholding final decision, but Sena
tors McNary and Stanfield said they
wore convinced that nn appeal In be
half of Mr. Haney would be granted.
Mr. Coolidgo Is understood to have told
Senator Underwood, democrat, Ala
bama, Saturday, that in any event tho
nomination of Mr. Thompson would be
resubmitted. '
