In tho1. year when Mctlford
boasted of a population of kIx hun
dred men, women and chftdron, wlit'n
the Southern Pacific depot occupied
a commandirg place directly lo the
middle of what Itt now the beginning
of West kfn'll Htreet and when only
farms could bo soon from tho gniHMy
bunks of Hear creek, In that portion
of the town that 1m now deHlgnuted uh
ariuHH the neck, the Ja kHon County
bunk was organized ml founded.

year only one busineHs remains on
Main .street that was flourishing at
that time. Strang's drug store has
the honor of being the oldest business
in the town with tho Jackson County
bank ranking a close second. The
bank was founded by the late W. I.
Vawter who was its active manager
for over thirty years. The business
was started in the room now housing
teddy's new Jewelry rftor'e which In
those early days was an entirely dif
ferent looking structure. A wooden
portico or awning extending from tho
front of tho building to the Blilewalk
providing a sheltered harbinger in the,
pioneer days for tobacco ehiKvers.
In 190ii the building now occupied
by the bank was constructed. It was
supposed at that time that the new
quarters would answer the purpose
for at least a century. How rapidly
the community as well as southern
Oregon lias developed is evidenced by
the fai t that the bank has more than
doubled In size in the lust seventeen
years making the old quarters entirely
Inadequate.
Believing that Jackson county Is on
the threshold of a very rapid advance
ment,.. j:uijy last spring the directors
of the bank decided to completely
remodel the banking rooms. Installing
new fixtures and vaults and doubling
the space occupied. The new vaults
aro of the latest approved construc
tion being 18 Inches of double rein
forced concrete and lined with a half
Inch of steel boiler plate. There are
nine tons of reinforcing teel also
used Irr tho construction. Tho new
vault door for the safe deposit depart
ment measures 1 1 inches in thtckuess
over all and weighs approximately

main lobby Is of gray Knox Tennessee
marble while the 111:11 bio for the
counters is of St. Genevieve golden
veined marble. This marble is espec
ially Imported from the Swiss Alps
and this installation is the only one
of Us kind in- the west. It Is rich In
color being of a beautiful soft brown
streaked with yellow and gold. The
wicket fixtures are of hand chased
cast bronze.
The decorations have been handled
with exceptional taste. The color
scheme consisting of tiffany blue ceil
ing with old ivory leaf work on the
cornice and soft tan side-walls which
In conjunction -with the la borate light
ing fixtures produces an effect of sub
dued elegance. The woodwork thru
out Is of genuine Honduras mahog
any. Tho cages, six In number, are
equipped with all the latest devices
and appurtenances necessary for each
department.
The P. T. Alngo company of Port
land deplgiied the wdrk and manufac
tured the fixtures. The bank will be
open for inspection Saturday after
noon and evening 'from four until
nine. . -
