Mr. Aess und Mr. KWigari had driven down from Itoseburg to accompany him lo that ptace. Mr. Ness driving. The nccident occurred Just after the parly had crossed the bridge over the South innpqua. They were driving ubout twenty-five miles an hour when suddenly a truck be longing to the stute highway depart ment appeared in their path, standing crossways of the highway. As It was foggy the driver did not notice the truck until lie was within severul feet of it nnd in order to keep from run ning head-on into the truck, turned the car and ran down the bank. "When they had. gone down the bank n few feet tho car turned over, pinning the men under it. They lay - there for about ten minutes beforo any assist ance came to them. Neither Ness nor Swigert wore hurt, but Mr. Vlntng re ceived several bruises and nearly frac tured several ribs. However, u car came along and offered to tako tliein on to Koseburg, where Mr. Vinlng de livered tho scheduled speech after consulting a doctor to seo that his wounds were not serious. In look ing around nfter the accident- Mr. Vinlng states that a flng was found about thirty feet from tho truck. It is thought that a red flag Is supposed to bo posted one hundred feet from any danger point.
