BRINGING jf-SsA DO vou EN JOY o-jJ AoiCV , -SEEIN" ME SL UM HAPPY? J PICKING UP GOLD IN BOX FACTORY CHUTE NEAR CITY "Gold is being picked up in the chute from a long pond to a box fac tory at ModTord and there is consul ornblo speculation as to where tho gold is coming from," reports Fred Williams, former member of tho state public service commission, at tho Ho tel Oregon. "The box factory has n pond about 500 feet wido. Into the pond are dumped logs which arc brought In over the hills from va rious parts of the count-. As the logs nro dragged along they pick up mud occasionally and this mud is rubbed off as tho logs are yanked out of the pond up the chute Into the sawmill. Men at tho mill have gathered enough flake gold to fill half a small bottle, The gold undoubtedly comes in mud on tho logs, but as the logs coma from all directions, no one knows whero the gold laden dirt is picked up. Of course, if someone took the time to scrnpo mud off each log before it was dumped . into tho pond and examined the depos it, it would be possible to locate the logs carrying the gold, and also to . check back where the logs came from. Hut even so, as the logs are generally dragged a quarter of a mile or moro, even if tho golden logs wore Identified it would then require a painstaking search of every foot of the ground over which tho logs were dragged be fore they were placed on the trucks. And no one wants to take that much trouble oven to find a gold mine." Portland Oregonian. Livestock PORTLAND, Ore., Nov. 24 (V. S. Department of Agriculture.)
