The portion of McArthur's statement having to do with this sec tion reads as follows: "Senator McNary says he is unalterably opposed to the injec tion of racial and religious Issues into politics. ThiB sounds good, but It does not square with Ben ator McNary's actions in recom mending members of " the Ku Klux Klan for appointment to important federal offices. In ad dition to his recommendation of Dr. Earl C. McFarland for col lector of customs for the port, of Portland, Senator McNary has - recommended H. A. Canaday, a reputed klansman at Mcdford, for receiver of the United States land office at Koseburg. Ho made this recommendation some weeks ago and has since been advised by the department of the inte rior that his nominee will not be appointed." It was known locally that Captain Canaday was a seeker for the place held by former Mayor "W. H.
