But those who intend to vote for the state income tax, on this ground, are due for a sad awakening. For if they would hut read the bill before voting for it, they would find that noni" of the "other fellows" at least are exempt. There aro the bankers, for example and the insurance men. They escape the state income tax entirely, why no one has yet explained. . . Then the assumption that the bill only hits the man with a large income is also erroneous. The single man who earns twenty dollars a week or more has to pay an income, tax under this bill. It is a very small amount for the $20 man, but it is a tax nevertheless. The married man who has an income of $175 per month or more lias to pay an income tax under the provisions of the proposed meas ure. J'ractieally no salaried man escapes. ' ' ' ' Moreover, instead of the proposed income tax relieving the tax iuirden of any Oregon tax payer it is certain, that if the' income tax passes it will simply mean .that more money will be spent at Salem, more office holders appointed and that tho net result will be to give no material relief whatever. As long as no other coast state lias an income tax The Mail Trib une would oppose the adoption of any income tax measure at the present time, even if it wero a desirable, measure of its kind. But even the proponents of this bill admit it is full of inequalities and de fects, Why adopt it then? Why not wait until the entire matter can be threshed out properly, and a uniform income tax bill adopted by Cali fornia, Oregon and Washington. Such a procedure would insure a more satisfactory income tax measure and would also save Oregon from again playing the part of thegoat.
