It is deem ed advisuble at this time to make a gonoral application of Araenute of Lead In order to control these pests. Ordinarily it is not necessary to make an arsenate application at this time for the control of codling moth, Calyces on pears do not close as rap idly and completely as apples, but it is believed thorough application of arsenate of lead on pears In moat parts of the valley will be profitable at this time. This spraying should start when the petals are about 95 per cent off. Varieties like D'Anjou. Clalrgeau, Bartletts and Howells will be ready first and a Utile later "Win ter Nellis, Cornice and Boao will be ready. Standard strength for Arsenate of lead is 2 lbs. of paste to 50 gal. water or 1 lb. of powdor. It is believed that spreaders can be used to advan tage in this application and for pears it is recommended that casein spread er be used. In sections where pear scab has been noticed lime-sulfur at tho rate of 1 gal. to 35 gal. of water should be added to the calyx spray. It is also advisable to use this lime-sulfur combination on Bosc nnd Winter Nel lis pears as this will increase the russetlng, which usually is an asset to the Bosc and Nellis. Applu Spraying. Every apple grower should have his spray uotfits ready and be able to cover his entire block of apples with in one week after the petals fail. Spraying of apples should start when about 90 per cent of the petals have fallen. Tho same strength of Arse nate of lead should be used as on pears and a spreader Is more useful for the calyx of the apple than for the pears. l-rom results in the past it Is believed that an oil spreader is more effective than the casein. An oil spreader can be used to advantage on apples but it is not recommended for pears as pears are very easily spotted. Use an oil spreader at the rate of 1 gal. to 100 gal. of solution. In apple orchards where aphids are showing up it may be well to use nicotine in combination with the oil and Arsenate. Three fourths of a pint of nicotine to every .-.00 gal. In some sections it may be necessary to add lime-sulfur to tho p.bove com bination for the control of appin scab. Lime-sulfur can be added la. the rate of 1 gal. to 25 gal. of w.ter. C. C CATE.
