STATE MEETING
Thore are seven men In Medford
whom the soliciting teams of the
chamber! of commerce membership
campaign will bo unable to sign up
next week. No arguments which they
can adduce can cause those doughty
seven to put their names on the dotted
line.
After a considerable debato by the
members of the campaign committee
it was decided to make public the '
names of these men. They are. F. S.
llramwell of the California Oregon
Motor company; P. P. llurk of the
Medford Tent and Awning Works; A.
R. Mason and C. V. Barrett of the
Mason Motor company; Theodoro
Wickson, manager of the Twentieth
Century Grocery; George L. Porge,
local roprosentatlve of the Montana
Life- Insurance company; and Al
phonse V. Aya, manager of the Co
lumbia Tiro corporation. They have
already signod up In the chamber of
commorce.
"It doesn't talio me long to see a
good thing," said Mr. 13ramwcll. "I
wanted to. beat the soliciting teams to
it; so I just went Into the chamber
yesterday and signed up."
"It looks to me as if the buslnoss
man who doesn't join the chamber of
commerce will be pointed out In the
street as an odd character. I'm not
taking any chances," remarked Mr.
Burk. "I got in on the ground floor."
George L. Forge is leaving town to
be away during the membership cam
paign. But he didn't want to be one
of the last to sign up. So ho went
over to the chambor of commerce and
bocame one of tho first. .Mont of the
early birds are newcomers in town.
A, GAL.
One of the pioneer hydro-electric
lines in thisi section of the country
will be sacrificed to progress tills sum
mer when the California-Oregon Pow
er company reconstructs its line run
ning from the Fall Creek power plant
to Yrekn. The present line is the
original one built in 1903 by tho Siski
you Light and Power company and
was the first long lino to carry hydro
electric current in northern California.
The old equipment will be entirely
replaced by new standard poles, wires
and Insulators, and a largo part of the
thirty-six mile right of way will bo
movod to a new location in order to
make the line more nsssssihle and
f easier to patrol; The voltage between
Fall Creek nd Montague, California
will be increased from 34,000, its pres
ent capacity, to GO.O00.
Farewell Reception for
Mr. and Mrs. Millard
tIto Christian church will give a
forewcl! reception to the retiring pas
tor, D. E. Millard, and wife, at the
church Friday evening, March 10th, to
which all members, their families, and
near friends of, Mr. and Mrs. Millard
are invited.
The program will begin at 8. p. m
and will be followed by a lunch.
A spocial invitation is extended to
the members of the orchestra and
those who have assisted In the choir
who are not members of tho church.

"Tho competent man, who Is out
of a Job Is an economic waste," de
clared Secretary II. O. Frobach, in an
interesting talk on unemployment nt
the meeting of the Medford commit
tee of the board of directors of the
Jackson County Red Cross, held in
tho public librury last evening.
Mr. Frobuch went on to outline nt
length tho unemployment situation
iu Medford and methods for taking
care of It for the past three years.
Three yours ago, he suid, from
thrco to ton men a day would call at
the Chamber of Commerce, asking
for Jobs. At that timo there was no
systematized method for handling
unemployment. The Chamber of
Commerce nnd the Ited Cross began
working together townrd this end
and hist year at the suggestion of
Secretary Frobach the Hed Cross as
sumed the responsibility of acting as
employment agency for tho commu
nity. Slnco last fall this work has de
veloped into a county wldo employ
ment agency. As indicated by tho
statistics published in the monthly
report of tho Red Cross work it is
shown just how much service to the
community tho Red Cross renders by
dovetailing the man and the Job.
Calls out of tho state for employment
have even been supplied through the
Red Cross.
Owing to the fact, however, that
many floaters or transiont unemploy
ed men pass through Medford, many
of whom are not competent, there is
always a certain amount of negligi
ble material on the unemployment
list.
Mr. Frobach has recently been ap
pointed as chairman of the committee
on employment for tho Red CrOBS.
Mrs. H. L. Noblltt, chairman of tho
Red Cross committee on cooperation
with the Public llealtii association,
gave an interesting report on the re
cent Portlund conference on public
health, which as chairman of the Pub
lic Health association of Jackson
county she attended.
She emphasized the importance of
care of tho tubercular and of tho
menace to tho community of having
this dread disease stimulated through
bad housing and poor living condi
tions. Miss Haines, executive secretary,
presented a report on the work ac
complished by the Red Cross for the
month of February, which shows the
wide scopo of tho work, which has
made many homes self-supporting,
giving to children, men and women
an opportunity for normal and wholo
som6 living. The manager of tho
Thrift Shop, Mrs. C. F. Card, present
ed the month's report on the work
of this useful and necessary depart
ment. Doth theso reports will be

man, In the chair; Mrs. A. J. Klock
er, vice chairman; Rev. E. P. Law
rence, recording secretary; Mrs. J.
C. S. Welils, chairman of the Red
Cross committee on work with the
handicapped; Mrs. L. K. Williams,
chairman of tho home service com
mittee, and Supt. A. O. Smith and
C. M. Kidd. Mayor E. C. Gaddis had
planned to attend the meeting and
sent his regrets that owing to nnothor
engagement he was unablo to be pres
ent. Among the vlBltors present
were J. C. S. 'Wollls, Mrs. L. Crane,
representing tho P. T. A., Mrs. Ella
M. Farrar and others.
At the request of members a re
view of benevolent work was given
by American Legion post officials at
the mooting lust night und tho hope
wus expressed that activities along
this line might be increased through
additional revenues from member
. ship.

gram of the district conferenco which

Oregon state depaitment. of tho
American Legion has divided tho
stuto into districts and meetings at
tended by all post officers and many
members of such separate districts
and stuto department officers have
already been held at La Grande and
, The Dalles.
Representatives from fourteen
posts will - attend the Medford con
ferenco in addition to State Com
mander George 11. Wilson and State
Adjutant Harry N. Nolson. Tho vis
itors will Include legionnaires from
Klamath Falls, Ashland, Iloseburg,
Mnrshfield, Bandon, Grants Pass,
North Bond, Coqullle, Myrtlo Point,
Lnkevlew, Gold Hill, Reexport, Oold
Beach and Pauley.
The Medford post officials intend
to carry out a rapid fire program
starting at 10 a. m. with roll call,
while. Intensive study of Legion mat
tors will occupy the morning session.
At 1:30 the department commander
nnd adjutant will take the meeting
in hand and various officers will be
given instruction In their work.
Closer cooperation between posts and
more efficient handling of welfare
work among ex-service men Is- ex
pected to result from tho district con
ferences.
In the evening a real hint of Med
ford hospitality will bo given the
visitors. A banquet will be served nt
a local hotel following which they
will bo guests of honor at tho Orien
tal ball room . whoro a big public
dance will be given. Local legion
naires hope that Medford will be sc
I lectod as the state convention place
In the not distant future, the comple
tion of the Armory making Buch a
gathering possible, and with this idea
in view a special effort will be made
to impress the conference visitors.
