Their efforts all wore thwarted
To still the engineers.
Long pestered then the public
Meekly arose en masse,
To launch a drive or niovoment
To get a quiet day,

The engineer then squatted,

And then a citizen popped up

Longlegged, gray, and very mad,
And evidently sore,
Who cloared his whiskered throat
And spat upon the floor.

WHY ALL THIS excitement about Fred Stone, the famous come
dian getting religion? There is 110 more reason why a man
who earns his living 011 the stage should not give ten per cent of his
income to the church than a inan who earns his living off it. Thous
ands of business men give as liberal sums to the church. Mr. Stone
is essentially a business man. lie has merely capitalized his ability to
produce laughs, as other men have capitalized their abilily to produce
shoes, or enkes of soap. Nothing more uatural than that he should
feel the spiritual urge, sooner or later, and do his bit to udvanee the
efforts of the ministry.
Probably the sensation caused by his action is due to the fact
that the Puritan tradition dies hard. Ono of the strongest Puritan
traditions is the wickedness of the stage. This proceeds largely from
;ho conviction that to be virtuous one must be sombrethat righteous
inoss can only thrive in an atmosphere of gloom. In this direction it is
interesting to remember that the early Puritans did not oppose bear
biliting because it gave pain to the bear, but because it gave pleasure
to the spectators. '

Consequently when a man who has made a conspicuous success
of limiting the people laugh, shows a disposition to take as much in
terest in the church as he does in the Red Cross or Actor's Relief fund,
there is a tremendous sensation and all the editorial scribes promptly

As we see it, there is no marvel. Fred Stone has always been a
clean living, hard working, decidedly conscientious citizen. . He has
been a devoted husband and a loving father.' There have been hun
dreds of actors, vaudevillians and circus performers very much like
him. Only those unsophisticated persons who still believe 110 man
or woman can find success on the stage without losing their morals,
have any reason to be unduly impressed by the "Scarecrow's" pres
ent conversion.
When Mr. Stone abandons his vocation and takes up preaching
there will be some cause for moralizing. . Hut until then, there is no
more reason to bo amazed at his putting a big roll in the contribution
box than if John Drew or Charles Dana Gibson or Herbert Hoover
should do the same thing, which undoubtedly all these men have at
some time or other done.
