known to have been killed and one
injured In a series of several explo
sions at the plant nf the Illinois Pow
der Manufacturing company near hero
this urteritoon. The number of dead
and injured may increase when the
debris Is cleared away.
ST. LOl'IS, Mo., Feb. 22. It was
said over the long distance telephone
I from Grafton. 111., that Hire explo
sions occurred this afternoon at the
plant of the Illinois 1'owd.er com
pany. The explosion was folt in some
parts of St. Louis, which is 2G miles
from Grafton.
The telephone reports from Graf
ton stated the fire In the smnller
buildings was advancing toward a
! store containing 100 tons of grycer-
Ine and that it was feared this would
explode. The plant consists of about
forty buildings, mostly small, scat
tered over a tract of 13 j acres, it was
said.

mittal view of the pacification of
Ireland to "a cautious but undoubted
optimism," among wel) informed resi
dents of Dublin is reported by the

in Dublin actually declares that peace
is in sight, but that nearly everyone

and after-the-war tax bill of tho Amer
ican people has aggregated $24,261,
168,530, or more than the present total
of the public debt. This Is disclosed
in the ronort today of the house ap
propriations committee on the third
deficiency appropriation bill, which
carries an item of 78,655,000 for the
refund of taxes erroneously collected.
Of the total $1,006,905,343 repre
sents additional assessments and col
lections resulting from office auditB
and field investigation.

posed amendments to tho constitution
were ordered reported toduy to the
house.
One, by Senator Norrls, republican,
Nebraska, would change from March
to January the date of inaugurating
presidents and from December to Jan
uary the time for tho convening of the
regulur session of congress.
The other, by Representative Fos
ter, republican, Ohio, would give con
gress power concurrent with that of
the several states to limit and to pro
hibit the labor of persons under the
ago of 18. A similar amendment has
been reported by a scnuto committee.
SETS A NEW RECORD
DAYTON, Ohio. Feb. 21. A new
record was set by tho DeUothebaat
helicopter, being perfected by the air
service at McCook field here, when It
remained in the air for two minutes
and 45 seconds In flight early today.
The machine, which arises and de
scends vertically, reached n height
of fifteen foet. Previous marks set
by the machine in flights last De
cember 18, were a height of eight
feet and a flight duration of one min
ute and 49 seconds.
