Mayhap, the public has the fool idea that the church should function as a soulsavcr, Instead of a votegettor; that the pulpit should not be a stump, from which to shout the glories of a candidate with an Incur able mania for office; and, that a house of worship was not Intended as an Incubator for 11th hour gossip. A distinguished European writer is quoted as saying: 'Civilization is rot ting down very widely and nothing is being done to arrest it." Tlie peril of this moment of history is emphasized from a thousand angles of life and thought. The moral development of much of our life is along the lines of recreation anil ease, of comfort, of luxury, of settlement Rreat enterprise, of high and conspicu ous achievements, of the amassing of great wealth and the building of vast nes. But the distinct call of God each of the three elements can do their work best. HOW MUCH DO YOU KNOW? Hilvution. That a majority ot the people appreciated mis laci was shown in the sprinj? elections, when the republicans were decisively defeated and the Griffith-Collins forces were returned in overwhelm ing numbers. lint with all their prating of devotion to democratic principles the Sinn Fein irreeoneilables, disregarded the verdict of the polls and proceeded to fight their own countrymen, who through years of struggle and sacrifice, had at last secured what Ireland hail dream ed of for a century, virtual control of her own affairs. It has frequently been said in eritieism of England's Irish policy that England docs not understand Ireland. "We wonder if anyone docs, even the Irish themselves. From this distance any sympathetic understanding seems impossible. The murder of Collins merely adds authority to the oft-repeated judgment that an. Irishman's love for a fight exceeds his love for anything, that Ireland does not need a president nearly as much as it needs a referee. Wherever the exact truth lies, this much is certain, the death of Collins will pretty thoroughly remove what sympathy remained i" this country for the cause, of the Irish irregulars. It will mean or should mean the end of financial assistance from this side ot the ceean, to De Valera and his band. That is some gain, even though slight, for the tragic loss which the true Ireland has sustained. Quill Points In our day 11 bare existence indicates more nerve than poverty. Then caino a salesman from Long Beach, who wished to sell mo sundry shares; he said, "Our prospect is a peach, we do not deal in fakes or snares. There's oil, my friend, 'neath Signal Hill, there's oil in windrows, heaps and piles; and when our boys begin to drill, the oil will squirt at least five miles." H Is a time above every other time in his tory to put- the Kingdom of God first. It is not a matter of the saving of Methodism. It Is the problem of the saving and conservation of Christ's re demption of humanity upon the croBs. In the spirit ot confidence and loVe we earnestly entreat our people every where to join us in a large spirit of sacrifice and devotion. As your chief pastors, we pledge ourselves anew to a larger measure of this spirit. It is not tho hour in history for Christian men and women to figure chiefly for gain, to adjust the scale for personal advantage, ease or comfort. It is the hour to lose our time, our strength, our ability, our lives, our all, that we may fill up. In a measure at least, the sufferings of Christ. We are sure that nothing short of this spirit widely dis seminated throughout tlie entire mem bership of our church will meet the crisis of tliis hour. "I criticise by creation not by find ing fault," said the great Michael An gelo. A greater than he said, "He not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good." 'ihls is the hour for a constructive view, for a sympathetic and helpful statement of all the facts, for a crdative period In the life of our church. The Living Christ must be the center of this creative movement. for In Him is life. A large measure of this spirit of the Living Christ for each of us in personal living and then for others through us'is the only hope of the world situation as it is related to our own church. The demand is urgent the need heartbreaking, the opportuni ty strategic. Let every man of us do his best. i This statement was issued after three days of consideration of tlie mutters with which It deals. It is signed by Bishop W. F. Anderson, sec retary of the board. ' Tho part of the statement of especial interest to the Methodist , Episcopal church deals with the Centenary move ment. Urging Methodists everywhere to meet their Centenary obligations that Christianity, at least so far as Methodism is concerned, shall not fall he bishops say: The destiny of the1 world hinges upon Chrlstiunlty. Our tremendous re sponsibllity hns driven us anew to our knees. Our faith assures us of the re- cources which are in God and we have confidence to believe still in the loyal ty of the heart of the church. It has never been the custom of Methodism to fall. We do not believe our church will fall now. We pledge you our all that It shall not fail. Brethren, pray for us! The Centenary record of tho local Methodist Episcopal church Is said by tlie pastor to lie most excellent. When subscriptions for this cause were taken tho sum of approximately thirteen thousand dollars was pledged. The subscriptions were made to cover a period of five years. The report of the last annual conference showed that the local church had paid one hundred per tout of its subscriptions due to that date. Kev. Sasnett said today, "Our people are loyal to the interests of the church. -Many of the members of our church will" bo able to meet their Centennry subscriptions only by great personal sacrifice. How they shall respond to the call of our bishops will be seen when tlie treasurer makes up the re port for the, annual conference, which meets In Salem Sept. G. 1 believe most of the Centenary subscriptions will be paid In time to be Included In the re ports to be read at the local church conference, which will he hold here Friday evening of this week. V. Amet of the Agriculturist Mar ion Products company of Tacoma has been in Medford tho past few days making arrangements to supply local dealers with fertilizers. In speaking about the value of fertilizers in raising fruit Mr. Amet said today: Knney fruit always brings n premium in the market and a one-sided fertilizer or a simple, will not produce a fancy fruit, although often it has been shown In new regions that the quality may sometimes be maintained for a year or so by the use of simples. Hi the spring, after the soil Is worked a liberal application of spring fertilizer should be made in order to strengthen tho trees, or vines so that they wili properly function at the time when blossoms nre forming. A third applica tion ot fertilizer may be made later when tho vino or tree la coming into full bloom. A great many famers fig tiro on making only one application of fertilizer a year, forgetting the law of nature that living things prefer to eat less nt a time and more often for best health and highest efficiency. The extra time and labor consumed in mak ing two or three fertilizer applications as well recompensed iu better results as against where the same amounts of fertilizer are used put on all at one feeding. Another point to bear in mind is that by giving two or three feedings, the nitrogen, phosphoric acid and potash can be divjded up and a li ft lieu Airplane Flivver Soon On Market at Cost of $500 Each (I?y International News Service.)
