This query is prompted by labor agitators, one of whom in an address here re cently, asserted that the Southern Pa cific was paying machinists, as strike breakers, $40 per day of eight hours, or $C0 per day of sixteen hours, f.o.b. nny of the railroad shop terminals. " '- I Albert Haas, general utility jobber, is moving from the second story Peil apartments, corner of the Plaza and Park streets, to a suburban location on II street, where the peak extent of traf fic is not quite so congested. The Hyatt Prairie dam, about 15 miles east of town, a reservoir which will be the chief feeder of the Talent irrigation project, impounds waters which will cover nearly 1000 acres. Twenty feet of the height of this con struction work has been completed, leaving about thirty feet to finish, with over three score men on the job. In other proportions it will be 200 yards long, 80 feet wide at the base and 20 feet wide on top. It is of dirt construc tion with a concrete base down to bed rock. Estimated capacity is 16.000 acre feet of water, capable of Irrigating the big tract at present signed up, which ' approximates 10,000 acres, on the basis of affording one-and-a-half acre feet. Construction operations are lively, a steam shovel, scrapers and rollers rein forcing the labors of the crew of men. A trip to the scene of these activities affords a fine outing over the new Green Springs Mountain highway to the summit and thence over a very fair road to the dam. No creek In particu lar will feed this big reservoir, but the contour of the prairie section is such that it drains a big section of the coun try in that locality, rain and snow meeting requirements, even if no large stream is available as a filler. Con struction work is to be completed by November 1. ' Jesse Winburn left on Monday for a visit to coast sections in the vicinity of "Crescent City, going by way of Grants Pass. He had previously visited the Josephine caves, but had never viewed the Pacific from either a Del Norte or Curry county perspective. He went in his own private car personally con ducted. The Ashland military company has been invited to participate, thus rein forcing the several Woodmen forester teams. A new camp of M. W. A. is being organized at Rogue River, pos sibly In time to take part in the'picnic. A barbecue will be a feature of dinner preparations. The private car "Berkeley" was here early in the week, conveying Chas. S. Fee, of San Francisco, to Canadian summer resorts to attend a gathering of railroad executives. Mr. Fee is pas senger traffic manager of the Southern Pacific. John M. Scott, of Portland, general ticket agent of the S.
