JL large part of it will come under the head of summer fiction.
Take the argument in favor of tho Single Tax, for example.
Now the Single Tax in Oregon, at leasthas hud more lives than
the proverbial cat. It has been
bob up at the next election, as spry as a cream-fed kitten. It is with
us this year, just ns full of lies and promises as it was a decade ago.
The Single Tax, we read, will settle all of Oregon's taxation
troubles, it will ease (he tax burden on the owner of improved prop
erty, it will force the large land owners to cut up their holdings and
improve them, it will result in the greatest prosperity for the common
man ever enjoyed in this great and glorious commonwealth.
To the creative artist this furnishes an inspiring picture. Every
one wants lower taxes, everyone wants more prosperity, everyone
wants, or nearly everyone, a better lot for the common man, so
why not vote for the Single Tax?
The best reason is because it doesn't work. Fortunately this
beautiful fragment of fiction lias been tried out in Uritish Columbia
for several years, has been reduced to terms of reality, and wlwit
Single Tax does, can be determined by anyone who cares to take a
trip to Uritish Columbia or cares to write to any resident of that
province and secure a few facts.
In brief, British Columbia, at least as far as Victoria and Van
couver Island are concerned is bankrupt. True the large land owners
have lost their holdings to the state, but this lias dimply resulted in
a serious loss in tax revenue, and an increase of the tax burden upon
the owner of improved property. As a result the most conspicuous
thing in Victoria today is the "For Sale" sign. Everything in the
way of residence property is for sale, l'eople are leaving Victoria by
every boat, to take up their residence somewhere else. A more dis
mal and depressing picture of business collapse could scarcely be
imagined.
Only last week, nn official report on tho tax situation in Victoria
,was presented to the provincial government, and it declared in sub
,'itanee that unless complete bankruptcy was to be suffered and that
fioon, the Single Tax would have to be repealed, and a return to the
old system instituted with il strong income tax, and improvement tax
slapped on to 'balance the terrific losses. It is all there in black and
while. Any one who wants the details can undoubtedly secure them
by writing the Victoria Times which printed the report.
Under ordinary circumstances it would hardly seem necessary to
iigain become excited over 'the Single Tax. But in tho present politi
cal atmosphere anything may happen. If thousands of voters can
see some benefit in injecting religious intolerance and warfare into
Oregon they can sec benefit in injection of the Single Tax.
But fortunately for the northwest, the experiment,-Hind a milder
fonn than is proposed here, has been tried out in British Columbia.
Canada's loss should bo America's gain. Single Tax simply means
ruin double distilled. Victoria, B. 0. proves it.
