steamer Aladdin was seized by a Unit
ed States marshal following the arrest
of the 'engineer, Albert Rollick, on a
charge of violating the prohibition
laws.

fair. It involves not India alone, but tho entire East, from Japan to
.Suez, and is not only directed against England, but against the entire

Religion is at tilie bottom of it. Not Protestant against Catholic,
of course, but Mohanimi'dism, Buddhism, etc., against 'Christianity,
the religion of the east against the religion of the west. More than
tluit, there is a strong political sympathy between Gandhism in India
and Bolshevism in Russia, the common denominator being Opposi
tion to the capitalistic system, and a strong passion for the supremacy

How far this movement will extend no one can tell, but that it is
desiined to shake the complacency of the western world before it
subsides, is reasonably certain.

every point of advantageous coueeal
ment. Suspicion, innuendo and down
right falsehood aro abroad. Piracy and
character assassination nro of every
day occurrence. Under tho, Oregon
System, with Its direct primary, initia
tive, referendum and recall, none but
the hardholled can hope to survive.
However, If a few slmplo rules could
be adopted tho warfare might be made
somewhat more humane, and right
here your groat dally cun help out a
little by making a rule that whoever
gets a communication into "Ye Letter
Box" must do so over his full signa
ture. Ordinarily this Is not Important,
but in a showdown fight It is.
Now, for instance, 1 would liko to
know whoso those Republican Voters

paign. She appeared often in the col
umns of tho Mall Tribune and sho did
yeoman service for the great cause of
"lie kept us out of war." I was chair
man of tho republican county commit
tee at the time and the sentimental old
lady gave mo many a thoughtful mo
ment. Hut opportunity finally gave us
a chance to lift her petticoat, and lo
and behold she wore boots, and lived

Hut to get back to the present. In
the past two months I hnve had thej

tabulating some now and heretofore
unknown varieties of the Republican
family. Some are hooded and gowned,
and some are almost entirely without
covering; some believe everything
they heitr and read and others don't be
lieve anything they read or hear. These
are of the common or garden varieties
which make up tho vast majority of
the electorate and are observed In the

democratic party as well as in our
own. But a new, high bred and strik
insly gorgeous type that 1 am now la
borloiisly trying to classify is the kind
that carry pistols, and In the daytime
fume and cuss on the streets, and at
night feverishly toss and babble of the
constitution being overturned, our lib
erties imperiled and our courts flouted.
And they mutter of fiery crosses, of
anonymous and threatening letters, of
moonshine and recalls, of judicial can
dldates that refuse to talk x sign, of
Kelly-Republican Clubs (ye gods!),
and of carp and crows, of the wrath to
come, and the old gray mare that came
out of thq wilderness. At about this
stage they fall out of bed and weakly
call for a drink. . , ,
I share honors with Edisoii Marshall
on the discovery of this last or pistol
variety. In the meantime the Pope
surrounded by the Swiss Guards be-
nignantiy rules the world from the
Vatican at Rome, the Imperial Wizard
sits scheming and plotting on his
Uirone at Atlanta, the modern Messiah
has been displaced and eclipsed by a
country town printer, Joe Tumulty is
sulking in deep disgrace, the knightly
and chivalrous governor of our beloved
commonwealth occupies an uneasy and
uncertain cha'ir in the state house at
Salem, the republican county commit
tee continues to function harmoniously,
the Jackson County Lincoln club still
lives, grace abounds, our blessings are
many, we should worry!

and who seems to bo the brains of Its
"invisible government" in Jackson
county, says, over his own slgnaturo.
In tho columns of The Tribune, that
tho Ku KIux Klan'Is not back of tho
movement for the rocall of Sheriff
TerrlU.
It is possible to fool some of the
people all the 'time, but the gentle
man mentioned 'should know that ho
cannot fool all the people. There
are very few who will believe him
when he says tho Ku Klux Klan -Is
not using its invisible powers to re
call the sheriff.- '
Mr. Howlett, in his news Horns
from Eagto Point last week, stated in
your columns that "Mr. Hoogstraat,
thp Kleagle of tho Medford Ku Klux
Klan and Mr.. Howard Hill nre here
circulating a petition for tho recall
of Sheriff Terrtli." . '
Now somebody' has lied, and it Is
not "Dad Howlett." For a compara
tive stranger" In 'our midst, Mr. Hoog
straat' and bis aides have succeeded
In stirring up a great deal of strife
in tho community, and which -will re
sult in imposing additional burdens
on tho tax payers of Jackson county.
We do not expect members of the
Ku Klux Klan to toll the truth re
garding their actions. The Klan
loves to fight In tho dark and under
cover of a mask, but Its work is be
coming - more fully! understood, and
thiH fraternity with Its principles of
hato, narrow religious - bigotry and
racial discord will, in a short time be
a thing of the past, and the Kleagles
wilt move'on to more fertile fields for
theif propoganda

An umpire is a territory or fcountry
presided over by an emperor. ' In'vis
iblp, that which cannot be seen; bid
den, Imperceptible.. All empires -are
not accredited with equal rank. "The
Empire" would imply tho hlgliost
rank. The K. K. K.'s assume the
title, "The Invisible ' Empire," from
which they claim tho very highest
rank. Not "An Invisible Empire,"
but ' "Tho Invlsiblo Empire," claim
ing tho right to regulate all functions
of government by tho exercise of hid
den and secret methods. They, claim
tho rli;lit to exercise direction of mat
tors of conscience in tho worship of
God; to exercise all judicial functions
and control of the-conscience of our
judges: to direct and regulate hu
man actions by hidden ' and ' secret
methods; to nrrest, accuse, try,' sen
tence and execute the commands of
their "Imperial Wizard," which they
are sworn by tho most serious oath
to do. They use every device tbut
conies to band to hide tho identity
of their membership; thus justifyliiK
their assumption of "Invisible." Their
masks aro .not confined to' sheets
which cover their bodies and hide
their, faces, but iu matters such as
the present recall procoedinKS they
have secretly humbugged ministerial
assooiatlons, and the W. C. T. U. to
come to tho front and assume iho re
sponsibility, while tho K. K. K.'s use
these simple-minded fanatics as a
human musk to hido behind. When
accused of this they either deny, or
stand mute, thus proving their fidel
ity to tho oath they have taken to
hold sacred tho secret of a chinaman,
in everything except "treason, rape
and wilful lmirder." There were
among those who circulated the re
call petitions for tho recall of Sheriff
TerrlU, members who at tho snme
time circulated K. -K. literature, to
those who were solicited to sign the
petitions, thus becoming "visible" in
spots. " '
This combination of mummery and
meaningless words, phrases and
mohkeyshines would be a huge Joke
did it not carry a dangerous menace
to the peace, quiet and dignity of tho
country. The poke would be upon
many well meaning men., who,- be
cause of nervousness, begat by the
spirit of the times have been induced
thoughtlessly to contribute their
money while they swear at the hard
times and hlirh cost of living.
I have heard it claimed that there
are a million members of this hokus
pokus gang klnn In tho United States.
If so. according to the facts gleaned
by the congressional Investigation
and the New York World's expose, it
means $10,000,000 for Initiation: $1,
000.000 per month for membership
dues- nnd $6.50 each for masks
miiklnc. In nil nt the end of the
year $8,500,000. What becomes of
thls' money?' These- investigations
show that "The Imprt-lal Wlmrd."
Simmons by name a very poor man
only a few years ago, now receives
$1000 per month nnd occupies n $23.

tion of tho old K. K. K. of reconstruc
tion days; an orKunizatinn that was
outlawed liy the U. S. government for
its c,rimes more than fifty years ago.
In New York they play upon the
prejudices against the Jews; on the
Pacific Coast tho . prejudices . against
the - Japs ,aiul ;&Mnese, is 'the'. card
they play, whllo everywhere' .they tire
trying to stir up a';' Wellgious war.
