ASHLAND, July 12. We have sum
mer schools and conferences, celebra
tions and Chautauquas on a firm. foun
dation, but a brand new departure will!
be the institution of the Ashland Con
servatory of Music, which will open on .
Sopt. 5. This will be a distinct addi
tion to ,the advantages of the town,
both musically and educationally. The
Leschetlky method on the piano will
be in vogue. This sounds rather Bol
shevik, but they say the title is really
Polish, and the great author is one of
the noted masters of the profession.
Rooms very conveniently located for a
studio have been secured in the Camps
block, the conservatory, to be conduct
ed by Madame Tracy Young.
The radio has invaded Lake of the
Woods precincts for the edification of
the large colony of campers there. Con.
certs are "listened in" daily, and it is
said the big chorus by Pelican Bay
Mosquitoes can be heard with peculiar
plainness at the lake lis it is broad
casted over a wide extent of country.
Miss Constance, daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Charley McWilliams, of Klamath
Falls, came to Ashland last Sunday for
a visit with her grandparents and aunt
in the F. G. McWilliams family.
Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Day of Hono
lulu, have returned here from their
northern trip which extended as far as
Centralia, Wash., and will visit Crater
Lake with a party of friends, Job
Tozer being sky pilot of the auto tour.
The baby elk addition to the park
zoo is proving to be quite an attrac
tion. It is about the size of a young
calf, and quite docile, even playful.
A score have signed papers to recall
the recall petition, and more stand
ready to sign up just as soon as it be
comes evident that addition signatures
are needed. The signatories, however,
are trusting that enough defective
signatures will be discovered in the
original recall papers to defeat the
movement without further effort on
their part.
A dozen Ashland lads are enrolled
in attendance at the boys summer
camp on Elk creek, conducted under
Y. M. C. A. auspices. Many more would
have gone, but during these vacation
days dad needs son to help on the
ranch, also in the garden and orchard.
Albert McCann, S. P. employe with
headquarters at Dunsmuir, was 1n
town lately in company with Jim Dod
son, enroute by auto for Crescent City
on a pleasure trip, also prospecting
for a Job In the coast country.
The City Laundry is run on the eight
hour system, but the summer schedule
Is from 7 a. m. to 4 p. m., instead of
from S a. m. to 5 p. m.. this arrange
ment better accommodating the help
during the prevailing hot spell.
Rev. H. A. Carnahan, of Oakland,
Calif., was in town early in the week
on his way to Crater Lake. He was
with a party of three, relatives from
Nebraska, touring coast sections by
auto, and of course must needs see
southern Oregon's great natural won
der. Mr. Carnahan is still associated
with "Y" work in California, headquar
ters being at the Embarcadero, San
Kranclsco.
Mrs. Trautfether, formerly of the
Plaza confectionery, in this city, now
resides In Medford, having married a
party by the name of Temple, an 1m
plement dealer in the county metropo
lis. Arthur Trautfethe,r and his sister
htnei are in San Francisco, and Ger-
trade is an employe of the Jackson
County bank, Medford.

cers on Tuesday evening this week,

the Shasta division run between this

In order to effect a surcease of
ennui at Lake of the Woods, Prof. Vin
ing hied himself to Yreka where he
made the eagle scream on the Fourth

he returned to the hydro-arboreal en
vironment at the lake, after stocking
up with a grubstake of supplies which
indicate that he plans to entertain a
legion of friends during the summer.
Rev. I. W. Allen of Chicago, preach
ed in the Presbyterian church last Sun
day morning. Rev. C F. Koehler, the
pastor, left Monday for the gynodical
gathering at Corvallls, and later on
will go, to Portland to participate In
activities Connected ' with Sunday
school work throughout the synod's
Jurisdiction.. On Sunday, July 16, the
Christian Workers Hand, all young
folks, will have charge of the morning
services. -Don't

that Institution will observe the Sab
bath to keep it holy during those two
months in Hie year. ' '
FAIR MEETING TO BE
HELD TONIGHT
Directors of the fair association will
meet this evening at the office of the
chamber of commerce and many de
tails relative to the operation of the
fair next September will be given their
consideration.
Some of the materials which havo
been holding up the completion of the
buildings now under construction are
beginning to arrive and within the
next few weeks the Improvement pro
gram of the association will be more
than half completed.
By the end of this week the Agricul
tural and Horticultural Palace will be
under roof after which the hanging of
the doors and windows, installing of
the plumbing and laying of the coment
floor will complete that structure. This
building is 75 feet wldo and 109 foot
long. The building which the mer
chants contemplate putting up will be
6t fee wide and approximately 130 feet
long.
