It is a safe assertion that at least 50 tourists. from Portland ulone would spend part of the summer here this year if there were a good nine-hole golf course. 1 ; Golf is no longer an exclusive game. When participants are con sidered it is the national game. With the average well-to-do East erner looking for a better climate in which to spend his restful years, only places with golf courses are considered. That this fact is recognized generally can be demonstrated here in Oregon. Medford is the only progressive community of any size in the state without its golf course. Eugene, Salpm, Corvallis, Baker City, Hood River and Roseburg all have golf courses or are mow putting them in. Hood River is spending $20,000 for its land alone, and at least $15,000 for laying out the course. Roseburg has a club of 100 members that has raised $20,000. . Medford will soon be hopelessly out of it as a tourist center if a golf cl ub. is not established. , Not only are. the conditions for golf ideal here, but with the fishing and hunting, a golf course would make this part of Oregon truly a Sportsmen's Paradise. I , Some time ago a movement for a golf club was launched, hut it linnarentlv has been lost somewhere in the shufflo. It should be re vived at once. COMMUNICATIONS Regarding "Mrs. Jay" To the Editor:, In a recent Issue of your paper the following Item appear ed in the Ashland correspondence: "Mrs. Jay, coloratura sapollo, has been engaged by, the Llthtans to tutor the grand chorus, which will lend vocal embellishment to the big parade features next' week." . . : Mrs. Jay graciously accepts the term "sapolio" as a typographical error for "soprano." However, as a friend of Mrs. Jay, I wlsh.to correct the Impres sion that the word "soprano will leave, as the lady Is not a vocalist, but a talented composer, and as such nas embellished the sparkling llthla waters of Ashland with -music-that is even more sparkling to the ear than the fa mous water is sparkling to the eye and palate.
