Members of the Grand Army
encampment spent this forenoon's
nesslon considering the action of the
United, Confederate Veterans in ses
sion at Richmond in what, was de
clared to be a malicious attack on the
memory of Lincoln and his purpose
in bringing about the civil war. A
condemnatory resolution was pro
posed, but finally, by unanimous
vote, it was decided the. better way
to meet the situation was to ignore
it. H. P. Burdick of Tacoma, assist
ant adjutant and qunrtermaster
general, while favoring the action
which the encampment took, ex
pressed his private opinion that
President Harding . and congress
should not lightly pass over the in-

Haines 94 years old, said to be one ot
the oldest pioneers of the Pacific
northwest, is dead at the borne of his
daughter, 'Mrs. R. D. Bordeaux, here.
Mr, Haines crossed the plains in 1852,
settling at Coos Bay, Oregon. His
activities exteuded . throughout the
entire northwest" and he had a wide
acquaintance among the early settlers
of the district. -. He came to Seattle
five years ago from Eugene, Oregon.
Mr. Haines leaves two, sons, C. W.
Haines,. Everett, Wash., and J. A.
Haines, Oakland, Calif. and five
daughters, Mrs. Grant Thompson,
Lawn, Oregon; Mrs. H. L. Morton,
Winthrop, Wash.; Mrs. W. W. Stevens,
Homedale, Idaho; Mrs. Clara Ellis,
Burns, Oregon, and Mrs. Bordeaux. ;
Funeral services will be held : at
Eugene, Oregon, where Mr. Haines
lived for many years.

NEW ATHLETIC CLUB

The gymnasium ot the Medford
Athletic club is bracticallv complete
and several local young men will be
gin training tonight for an amateur
smoker which K. O. Bob Brown, the
promoter of the club, bas planned to
stage a week from Friday night, June
3.0 th.
' Two showers with cement floors
have been installed and hot and cold
water will be available at any time,
day or night. The gym will be open
at all times and members may make
use of the facilities and equipment
whenever they desire.
A 20-foot ring is now complete and
is the best ring in the city as It is
solid, having been built on permanent
supports. A punching bag and sand
bag have been installed and a band
ball court will be completed by the
middle of next week as will bleachers
to seat the spectators at the amateur
smokers.
If the members are desirous ot
having a volley ball court, horizontal
bars and other equipment n addition
to the already adequate facilities, Mr.
Drown will Install them provided that
enough of the members make Use. of
them. . .
The ring Is In the middle of a large
room on the second-floor of the build
ing housing the yellow front garage
on Fir stret, and entrance to the
gym Is made from a stairway open
ing into the alley at the. rear of Bart
lett's. Fur Bhop.

Gosbee, TO, an employe of the United
States prison at McNeil Island, com
mitted suicide early today on the Point
Defiance ferry slip, by setting off a
stick of dynamite which he held In his
teeth. His head was blown off. De
spondency because of cancer of the
mouth is said to be the cause for the
action.

to face charges of having assaulted
two little Salem girls, on March 5, this
afternoon pleaded guilty to three
counts returned against him by the
Marlon county grand jury, and was
sentenced to life imprisonment on two

cause a great deal of trouble ; others produce a soft,
flaky carbon that will do no damage.

kind of carbon formed by a lubricating oil are the
crude from which it is made, tho process and care of
refining it.its purity and stability.
Advantages of Crude and V acuum Refining
Great care is exercised In selecting the crudes from
which Zerolene is made, to secure only those which
contain tbe most desirable lubricating values and at
the same time as liltl. as possible, if any, of the un
desirable hydrocarbons such as wax and asphaltum.
In selecting crudes, for Zerolene, the Standard Oil
Company has tho advantage of its own large produc
tion of practically every type of crude oil. For this
reason the company is not compellod to use any par
ticular crude because it happens to be the only one
available.
These selected crudes, catefully refined by our own
patanted, high-vacuum process, produce in Zerolene,
oils of the highest lubricating value, which, when .
burned in the. combustion chambor, develop a very
small amount of carbon of i soft, flaky nature, which
can do no harai s,od usually blows out entirely with
tbe exhaust.
