WHY PEOPLE TllK CO.M.MI'N'K'ATJOX in another column from .Mr. Jones is interesting been use it represents a very prevalent statu of mind. A great many people have become no disgusted with politics they have concluded to have nothing to do with them: Of course the view is a mistaken one, is in fact a dangerous one. The one time for Jlr. Jones to enter politics and go to the polls is the time when political conditions seem to him the worst. . The only time he has a valid .excuse to stay away to linn the best. Undesirable political conditions, instead of being an excuse for inaction are, or should be, the strongest incentives for getting busy, both in the campaign and at the polls. "When politics are cleansed of their corruption and injustice and pluced on a clean square basis, where a fellow can cast his ballot and feel he can get justice for his effort then everyone will vote," writes Mr. Jones. Perhaps. Hut it will make little difference' then whether they vote or go fishing. During the :nil!enium, there will be no elections, for no one will want them, and good government will keep going without them. Hut that time will never come by staying home and waiting for it. Kternal vigilance is the price of decent government, as it is the price of most desirable things in life. Political health like .physical health is a constant fight against disease. Hitting idly by because politics appear rotten is like sitting idly by because the flu epidemic appears particularly virulent, or sitting icily by because the enemy outside the gates appear particularly wicked and numerous. Then is the time to fight the Quill The shorter and uglier word for The voice of the people is seldom heard in a campaign when money talks. When Mr. Fird's money becomes too burdensome, he might try bucking grand opera. When lie lakes slock alter coining home, lie knows why they call jl spending" thu honeymoon. After one learns the art of gossip run down his neighbors. Strange how suggestively wicked new dances seem after a fellow gets too old to learn 'em. Just because there are no teeth low tlutt there is no ivory in them. Democracy in America isn't uncompromising enough to keep the ladies coldly aloof from a tilled visitor. Another peculiarity of the average man 'is his inability to sec what the other fellow has to hu conceited about. There's something about a soft collar that reminds us of the kind of parents sculptors use to drape deceased statesmen. Virtue and common sense usually triumph, when a girl is asked to ride by a stranger in n decrepit tin lizzie. Some people think n fifty-fifty split consists in giving their hearts t God and keeping their money for themselves. In this' free and glorious country, even the boy whose parents have named him Percy can make a name for himself, lie doesn't know what agony is say: "Now say your little speech Every college man should know figure out the hatting averages of Walt THE BULWARKS. TUB bulwarks of our liberty are threatened every day; some crisis rises fierce to see, and all alarmists bray. They trem .ble for the future course of this, our native land; and they orate until they're hoarse, an eagle in each hand. It was the same when I was young, a hundred years ago; the orator unwound his tongue and waved it to and fro. ltut little comfort could 1 find in all the wordy din; our sacred bulwarks, undermined, were swiftly caving in. And even now I can't forget the long nights in my room, where I vould lie awake and fret about our country's doom. I used to sit around and brood, and rend my costly duds; I lost my appetiito for food, and couldn't drink my suds. Rut as the weary years rolled by our country thrived and bloomed, and our palladiums .stacked high, nor knew that they were doomed. Our government grew great, and strong our banner pawed the air, our bulwarks, that were doomed so long were right side up with care. And so T hanishe'l from my soul the fears I long had nursed, I ceased to let the briny roll, and cheer-up smiles dis bursed. And now when some sad candidate expands his silver throat, expounding threats of doom and fate, he fails to get my vote. NEWCOMB FOR WOOD ICinch Slab Wood, dry in yard, $1.75 per tie;r. An amendment' m 1111s resolution endorsing me na tional administration was also unani mously passed. The first action of the newly seated committee was to vote a unanimous endorsement of the republican admin istration and republican candidates nominated In the primary election of last month. David II. Nelson scored certain re publicans who had declared a party split over the nomination of Governor Ben W. Olcott, and S. 1!. Sanderson, editor of the Freewater Times who recently wrote an editorial denounc ing the result of the primary and an nouncing Ills Intention of breaking away from the party, rose to the floor and said that Ills editorial "can be cor rected." Following the unanimous endorse ment of the resolutions committee which Introduced a resolution endors ing the straight ticket of thu republi can primaries, a unanimous resolution was adopted as following: Wo maintain that differences In the republican party should bo determined within that party, and by republicans, and not by democrats from within or without the republican party; we fur ther maintain that if those differences have not yet been sattled to the full satisfaction of the republican voters, tluit their further consideration Is a matter for future primary elections, and that for the purpose of a general election to be held this coming fall, all party differences should be forgot ten, all personal differences should be forgotten, anil that the republican party, in order to preserve its integrity as a political institution should elect its entire and complete ticket, without any exception at all. APPEAL TO CHURCH TO -WASHINGTON, Juno 6. An np penl to the churches and their meni lit'i'H to urge upon congress that the American government take neces sary steps to "ensure the permanent protection of Armenians and other Christians under Turkish" was an nounced today by the federal coun cil of churches of Christ in Ameri ca. The council's letter to church pastors favors, nmonK other thiiiKS, that the United States extend finan cial aid to whatever body assumes the trust of organizing the adminis tration of Armenia. ' Asserting that tho Armenians were pledged protection from the Turks by the United States and its allies in the war, the federal council expresses opposition to the allled powers "in preparing a treaty with the Turkish nationalists which threatens to re turn the Armenians to unrestricted Turkish control. The contin ued advance of British exchange here to 4.51 for demand bills today was the noteworthy feature of the Inter national financial situation. Today's figure represents a gain of six cents so far this month and places remit tances to London at their highest lovel in more than three years. COMMUNICATIONS Why People Don't Vote To the Editor: I was reading your editorial in Saturday's paper, "Good GoBpel"; It was good alright. But why is It people do not vote? Do not even feel interested in voting? I think there is an explanation. A lew years ago In California there was an election for governor, and Mayor Rolpli was elected by a big ma jority vote of the people. And yet through a darkly laid scheme of dirty political tricks' he was beaten. It was so base and rotten people were' deeply hurt. I heard so many good people say they would nuver vote again, what was the use? The money powers buy the man. When politics, are cleansed of their corruption and injustice and placed on a clean souare basis where a fellow can cast his ballot and feel he can get justice for his effort then everyone will vote. But people, and good people, Uo, will never go and vote as long as politics are In the condition they are In today. They are so corrupt we scarcely i have any politics at all. CECIL JONES. Medford, June 5. IT MEAT IF KIDNEYS ACT- BADLY Take tablespoonfhj of SaJU if Back hurts or Bladder bothers Drink lott of water We are a nation of meat eaters and our blood is "lied with uric acid, says a well-known authority, who warns us to bo constantly on guard against kidney trouble. The kidneys do their utmost to tre tlie blood of this irritating acid, but become weak from the overwork; they get sluggish; the eliminative tissues clog and thus the waste is retained in the blood to oison the entire system. When jour kidneys ache and feel like lumps of lead, and you have stinging pains in the back or the urino is cloudy, lull of sediment, or the bladder is irri table, obliging you to seek relief during the night; when you have severe head aches, nervous ana dizzy spells, sleepless ness, acid stomach or rbetuuatiom in bad weather, get from your pharmacist about fo.jr ounces of Jad Salts; tako a tablespoonful in a glass of water before breakfast each morning and in a few days your kidneys will act fine. This famous salts is made from the acid of crapes and lemon juice, combined with lithia, and has been used for generations to flush and stimulate clogged kidneys, to neutralize the acids in urine so it is no longer a source of irritation, thus ending urinary and bladder disorders. Jad Salts is inexpensive and cannot injure; makes a delightful etfervescent lithia-wator drink, and nobody can make a mistake by taking a little occasionally to keep Lhe kidneys clean jnid active.
