' POTT! RTX STETVPORD MATT, TRTPUNT?, rplDFORB, ORKOONT. FRIDAY, MAY If). 1D22 A 4 w VERY LIGHT VOTE IN MEDFQRD IS CAST TO ONE P. M. It may have bpon due to the light Hhowera of the day und general threatening weather, or it may have been caused by a lack of voting en thtiRlaam, ht any rate up to early this afternoon hrtheclty of Medford only about one-ciRhth el tho registered vote had- -been .cast. one-of the quietest elections evei held in the city.; iN'o advices had been received up to that time of how the vote was com ing out in other towns and the rural districts. However It was Eenerally thought by. those familiar with Jack son county politics that last nisht's hard rain and the small showers today had prevented the farmers from working, which fact would induce them to visit their precincts and vote. It was also thought there would be a rush of voters to the polls in the late afternoon and early evening if the weather was good. The polls do not close until 8 o'clock. The over whelming majority of the votes cast, naturally were by republicans, due both to the fact that the democrats are in a hopeless minority and the lad that they had no contests for nominations; in fact had unopposed " candidates fir only two district of fices, that for circuit judge and that lor state senator, and a large portion ff thelr state and local ticket was not filled. This afternoon jt was estimated that only about 50 per cent or less of the registered vote of Medford would , be cast at today's election. Here are a few figures of the vote cast up to t about 1:15 p. m. In down town pre 'i c'neta: Newtown precinct, voting "- place at Washington school, total re? istrutiou 336 votes, only jt votes cast, ef which 42 were republicans and 14 democrats; North Main, street pre- : clnct, voting place SmlrVa tttt shop. at 121 North Grape street,! 2orj reg-,.',-' istered votes, 28 votes cast, of which - S3 were republicans and G democrats; " South Main precinct, voting place at Watkln's shoe shop.jJ7 West Main .street, 1S6 registered voters, 33 ,vote east, of whfcJj.'32 were repub lican and S democratic Up to" about 11:30 avjrn. at the . f .North Central precinct, voting place ; at the city hall, only IS votes had been cast. of the 2i3 registered, of wMch 15 were republican and 3 dem ocratic; and at the South Central pre . "einct, voting place at Paul's Electric store, where 150 vctes were cast at the last election, only 16 votes had been cast of which 14 were republi can and 2 democratic. There was some confusion at a number of precincts owing to Inad equate voting arrangements and fa cilities. The election board of the South Central precinct was unable to effect an entrance to that voting place in the rear room of Paul's electric store because the doors were locked , and "tliey bad been provided with no key. Finally, twenty minutes after 8 o'clock, entrance was effected only to find that proper equipment had CLERGYMAN MANAGES - DEPARTMENT STOflE it . i .Jf Lv RIALTO N0W V j:cv. Dr. T. n. The board used the box without it being locked until noon, when County Clerk Florey, the head of the county election board, in making his rounds, discovered this state of affairs and rectified it. At the Roxy Ann prec'net the elecr tion board arrived to. open up the polls to find that no election booths had been provided, and the voters were voting men of the day at thl precinct by writing out their tickets backed against the wall. Election returns will be received by the Mail TrUiune office by telegraph ton'ght. The first returns will not be received from Pcrt'and, where the double election board system was used today, until after the polls close it S p. m. LIFE SAVED SO HE MAY HANG LATER OSSIXlNG, X. T..
