B EX FRANKLIN was a wise olj inau. following opiuioti on Democracy: When iu Paris he gave the Hy equality we do not mean a literal Individual equality, for men are born with diverse attainments nnd power. We do moult nil equality of opportunity, tlio free piny of natural nbtlittc. Tito most able, men rise to tho top, tho least ub'.o nion, nnlurnlly gr:tUiite to tho bottom, hut their mutual relation must not bo that ot master and servant, but of coworker of different station, working alike tor tho common wonl, and between whom it real bond of sympathy and uuilcrstandiiig exists. Such a society means progress, contentment and happiness for all. This arrangement la not only bettor for tho average man, nut tor mow who oy riiaraotor and capacity uvo above or below. The Spinachetfes have adopted reso lutions that the starring husbands of the plump, beat the carpets in the houaecleaning period, as heretofore. The men had hoped the.enthusiasm of the war against fat would get them out ot this form of slavery this year. the absence of "sympathy and understanding" between the forces of labor and capital. ; ' ' HofU sides are dominated by extremists who eare everything for selfish advantage and nothing for the common weal. On the labor sitle we have men like 11. M. Jewell, who frankly de clares that in time of depression labor should not accept its share of the economic burden. Wages can only go one way, up. Capital must hold the sack even to the exteut of eliminating all capital profits. On the rapitill side we have a vast majority of the mine ope rators who, seeing a great strategic advantage in the present busi ness depression, are determined to destroy organized labor in the coal fields. They are willing to go broke a few years, if they can break the union forever. Both views are essentially wrong, and impossible. Xo element iu a democratic society can share its benefits without sharing its bur dens, no other element can indulge the right of organization and deny that right to any group of fellow countrymen. This sort of thing isn't Democracy, it is autocracy of the plainest kind, a dictatorship by labor on one hand, a dictatorship by capital on the other, resulting not in peace and contentment, but conflict and discontent. " ' The only solution, of course, is a return to the first simple princi ples of Democracy as outlined by Franklin so many years ago. It is not an easy road, though the fundamental principle is simplicity itself. Rut the road must be found and the man who can lead the people along it must be produced, if American institutions are to endure. Mayor's Proclamation! a . l' tl.K.VX VI A Nil PAINT IT ' . I mew not like a kitten, nor whinney like a mare; things come as they were written, and man must grin and bear." I have a boil that's throbbing with zeal beyond compare, and you may hear me sobbing, around a city square. I have no Spartan training to cope with such a plight, and, bitterly complaining, I walk the floor all night. And neigh bors come and chide me, and protests wildly make; they hate to live beside me I keep their cows awake. And peelers come and tell me I'll have to can my wail, or with their clubs thy '11 quell me and run me off to jail. I'm civilized so vastly, in cotton wool 80 reared, that every ache seems ghastly and makes me rend my beard. And so I view the Spartan with something like disdain, though nothing can dishearten that martyr in his pain. Oh, he is sorely smitten, with boils upon his brow, but says he "It was writ ten, so why kick up a row!" to doubt their Impelling motive, If not at once perceiving the "why and ! wherefore" of their exlntence.
