the absence of "sympathy and understanding" between the forces
of labor and capital. ; ' '
HofU sides are dominated by extremists who eare everything for
selfish advantage and nothing for the common weal.
On the labor sitle we have men like 11. M. Jewell, who frankly de
clares that in time of depression labor should not accept its share of
the economic burden. Wages can only go one way, up. Capital
must hold the sack even to the exteut of eliminating all capital
profits.
On the rapitill side we have a vast majority of the mine ope
rators who, seeing a great strategic advantage in the present busi
ness depression, are determined to destroy organized labor in the
coal fields. They are willing to go broke a few years, if they can
break the union forever.
Both views are essentially wrong, and impossible. Xo element iu
a democratic society can share its benefits without sharing its bur
dens, no other element can indulge the right of organization and deny
that right to any group of fellow countrymen.
This sort of thing isn't Democracy, it is autocracy of the plainest
kind, a dictatorship by labor on one hand, a dictatorship by capital on
the other, resulting not in peace and contentment, but conflict and
discontent. " '
The only solution, of course, is a return to the first simple princi
ples of Democracy as outlined by Franklin so many years ago. It is
not an easy road, though the fundamental principle is simplicity itself.
Rut the road must be found and the man who can lead the people
along it must be produced, if American institutions are to endure.
