the Modford Chamber of Commerce in
a body.
The particular reason for the Cra
ters attending this forum Is in honor
of A. II. Caimnerer. assistant director
to Stephen Mather of the national
park service and Horace M. Albright,
field director of the same service. vh

speakers of the day. The Craters also
; desire to honor their follow member.

The Craters are tin organization of
youns men of Medford who have as
their object civic and c unmercial ad-
vancement of the community. They
hold the same relative position in Med-
I fol d as do the Hosariaus in Portland,
i Corrians in Salem and the Kadiators
In Kucene. They initiate projects of
their own or lend their assistance to
iother oipaiiizatkms in briiiKini; about
i any object that is beneficial to the
I community as a whole.
: The membership of the ('raters is
limited to sixty. All applications to
beloiiK are placed on tho waiUus; list.
1 The initiation fee is five dollars and
there aro no dues. The money which
the Craters spend in their activities
must be earned by them as an organi
zation. Tho profit recently made in
the sale of the Medford automobile
name plates was a demonstration of
how they secure their funds.
Dinner meetings are held twico each
month at the Legion hall. A strict set
of rules govern the membership which
If disobeyed will cost them their mem
bership in the organization.
It is not ail work that the Craters
indulge in, but their dinner meetings
are made the occasion of a lot of fun,
good' fellowship and entertainment.
Members of tho chamber of commerce
will have the opportunity to see them
in action next Wednesday.

is to bo held on Thursday evening,

church, which everyone is Invited to
attend, In accordance with the procla
mation of President Harding of the
time honored custom of our country.

the city, including all the leading de-,
nominations. This will be a brand new
organization, its chief t- nets being the!
general welfare aa.; mutual helpuil
ness. All Sunday school officers and
teachers will be eligible to member
ship. Pastors and superintendents are
heartily In favor of this movement, as
it suggests a "merger'' of vital activ
ities the most iwtent of any single re
ligious and educational influence eith
er in city, state or nation. To further
this beneficial project, the success of
which Is already practically assured,
there w ill be a meeting at the Presby
terian church, on Monday evening.

The trip north will be by easy stages,
via Sacramento, in which city Milt
proposes to gaze upon a gorgeous
Shrine pageant on Nov. 2G, as staged
in the capital city by Islam Teniplo of
San Francisco, which by the way,
plans also to hold a ceremonial in
Dimsmtiir later in tho season.
Thanksgiving will be a holiday
termed "complete" by banks and
schools, the latter of which will not
reopen until Monday, Nov. 'IS. The
postoffico lid will also bo closed, the
only deviation being that mall will be
thrown to lock boxes, also tho duo of
marines, heavily armed, will escort
tho transfer from depot to office, reg
istered matter especially being per
sonally conducted. The union service,
customarily In keeping with tho tradi
tions of the day, will be held at the
Itaptist church, Instead of tho Presby
terian as heretofore announced, and
Hev. W. Judson Oldfield, a distant rel
ative of Harney, will deliver the ex
pression of thanks, he being tho Con
gregational pastor. Family reunions,
and big dinners at hotels and restau
rants will be tho rule, many of those
feasts following tho football engage
ment at Medford between the higu
school teams of that city and Ashland,
the final game of the season, hence a
struggle In which results will bo await
ed with interest.
Malta commandery meets on Wed
nesday evening, Nov. -3, to confer the
order of the Temple. Supper before
instead of after the work, and it will
bo served at 11:15 o'clock. Medford
members please notice.
Dr. and Mrs. Swcdouburg have re
turned from ail extended southern and
eastern trip covering nearly two
months.
Rev. II. W. lluckabec, evangelist, of
Dallas, Texas, Is assisting In revival
work at the Free Methodist church,
Mih. lluckabec leading tho prayer
meeting services.
Many personal effects of the late
Nancy Ann Cliapin are advertised at
private sale, beginning Nov. 'i'i. The
list includes a miscellaneous collection
including jewelry quaint as to design
and workmanship, souvenirs evidently
valued as family heirlooms. Mrs.
Chapiu was a pioneer of this Bection,
and a sister of the lato 1C. K. Ander
son. She died In this city several
months ago. '
The lOlks ooled about 50 turkeys at
a proThanksglving gathering a few
evenings ago, the birds being supple
mented by a lot of other supplies for
distribution at a rato which will vis
ibly reduce the high cost of giving
thanks on Thanksgiving.
The collection at the union service
on Thursday, usually diverted to local
aid purposes for the needy, will this
year be remitted for Near East relief,
and covered into the national fund.
It's rather a far cry from patching
pants to mining wntermelons, but a
local tailor contemplates trying the
experiment next season, nnd has trad
ed city property for acreage In the
vicinity of Koguc River, where he will
discard the tailor s goose and take up
the white man's burden in the role of
the man with the hoc.
The Ed D. ltriggs family arc receiv
ing a visit from Mrs. Frank Wade,
near relative of theirs from Faribault,
M.nn.
In spite of all the drives for funds
now- prevalent, the financial rating of
the local chapter, D. A. R., is away
altovo par, even after assuming half
of the expense Incident to installation
of the pioneer road marker near Phoe
nix, placed in position with appropri
ate exercises a few days ago.
The Junior high school presented an
enjoyable program on Wednesday of
this week, exhibiting remarkable pro
ficiency along certain lines of educa
tional diversification.
The Wolcott family has a family re
union in prosect. Ed is on his way
hero from the former homo in Michi
gan, to arrive during the forthcoming
holidays, and will probably remain in
Ashland Indefinitely.
The Taylor Players are at the arm
ory this week entertaining in a reiier
loire d voted to dramatics and kindred
attractions.
The local markets are well equipped
supply and demand in the way of liv

Doc Songer, whose trip to southern
climes in California was unofficially
forecasted sometime ago. says nothing
doing while the climate hereabouts re
mains as mild as at present.
Fred Schuerinan. Phil Wolcott. and
Claire King, ex-service men, lately
visited Portland for physical examina
tion, in line with recommendations
made by the cleanup squad of the fed
eral investigators which recently visit
ed this section on special business in
cident to status of former military and
naval men.
The union Thanksgiving service of
the churches will bo held this year at
the Christian church on Thursday
night at 7:30 p. m. Tho Thanksgiving
message will be delivered by Rev. 10.
P. Lawrence, pastor of. the Presbyter
ian church. Special music will be fur
nished by the Christian church choir.
The people of the city arc invited to
attend this service. It is a good oppor
tunity to curry out the president s re
quest for observing Thanksgiving day
as a day of devotion and prayer. That
at firesides and altars they will give
thanks lor all that has been rendered
unto them, and pray for a continuance
of the divine fortune which has been
showered so generously on this nation.
The offering to be taken at the
Thanksgiving service Thursday even
ing will ho for tho Armenian cause.
Rev. J. .1. llandsakcr, who is field
secretary for the Near East Relief has
recently returned from a visit to the
afflicted land. Here is what ho says
in a letter to the ministers of Oregon:
"On Sunday, August 7th, 1 stood
under tho shadow of Mt. Ararat. 1
was In the heaven of one of our or
phanages and outside its gates hun
dreds of children clamored for admis
sion. 1 helped to bring In twenty (20)
and then the gates were closed in the
face of hundreds equally needy. Dur
ing the last fouwr years 1 have fre
quently asked you for help which you
have gladly given. I am asking you
now for larger and larger service. Mr.
llandsakcr further slates that thou
sands today with whom ho frolicked
In tho orphanages in August aro in

American benevolence for their safety
