EIGHT KTEPFOftfi lUTC TRIBTTNT;. afEDFORff. OkEC.ON. FRTTUY. NOVEMBER .3 i. 1921' LIBRARY EARNS $32 PER MONTH BOOK FINES BY E Local Institution Popular One With Medford and Jackson County People Book Cir culation Increased 24 Per . Cent Last 10 Months. That the people of Medford and Juckeon county are realizing more ful ly the value of a first-class public li brary such as it has in the Medford public library is shown by the largo increase in the local, county and rural books in circulation. During the first ten months of 1320 the local circula tion was 42.464. During the corres ponding months this year the local circulation has been 62,013. These figures show a 24 per cent incroaao. This Increase came entirely during Uio summer and early fall and was almost nil In the circulation of children's books. New books acquired by the li brary are as many for the first ton months of this year as for the entire year last year and roughly number 1, 800. Fines for the first ten months of last year total $368.91, while Tor the some period of time this year they amount to $392.92. All Incorporated town In the county except Ashland and Phoenix support a brunch of the central library situated In this city. These branches are sup ervised by local people and are nlolwed $30 worth of magazine subscriptions throughout the year in addition to tho 200, to 600 volumes with which thoy ore equipped. The circulation of those branches during 1920 amounted to C 170, while ho fur this year 16.088 hooks have been taken out from the county branched. From 60 to 100 volumes are allowed prlvuto famlles who do not live near a branch, who are rosonslblo people and who agree to allow neighbors In tho rural districts to share tho nso of the books. Those stations are per mitted to keep the books over a period of, three months at the ond of which time thoy return thorn to the central library In ModTord and receive a now quantity, of reading material for an other-period of three months. Tliej oirouiuuon ut theso branches wiib GDI) during 1920 and has been so fur this year 1208. , A station of 200 boolm will unnn h established at ,tho now consolidated ' school which will make nnothor notice-1 able increase In the jural circulation mis year. ... . !: Theso largo Incronsos 1n all tho depurtmonts are largely due to the ef ficient and strenuous offorts put forth by Miss Van Sant. hnud Hhrarinn nn,i also by her assistants on tho staff of tne Medford public library. A. C. Barber, siate insurance com missioner and Jay Stevens, manager of the Fire Prevention Bureau of tho Pacific Coast met with local insurance agents. City Water Superintendent Davis, Fire Chief Law ton. and one representative of the city council Thursday, and, announced that Med ford was one of the three towns in the state scheduled for an increase in in surance rates, owing to the lack of adequate fire protection. Tho increase will be in Ihe neighborhood of 20 per cent if invoked. l.aek of sufficient pressure, danger of the main over Bear Creek bursting, and no reserve reservoir for use in emergency were given as the chief reasons for the proposed increase. The formation of a Fire Insurance Exchange was also urged by the visi tors who are on a tour of inspection.
