culation Increased 24 Per

That the people of Medford and
Juckeon county are realizing more ful
ly the value of a first-class public li
brary such as it has in the Medford
public library is shown by the largo
increase in the local, county and rural
books in circulation. During the first
ten months of 1320 the local circula
tion was 42.464. During the corres
ponding months this year the local
circulation has been 62,013. These
figures show a 24 per cent incroaao.
This Increase came entirely during Uio
summer and early fall and was almost
nil In the circulation of children's
books. New books acquired by the li
brary are as many for the first ton
months of this year as for the entire
year last year and roughly number 1,
800. Fines for the first ten months of
last year total $368.91, while Tor the

amount to $392.92.

A. C. Barber, siate insurance com
missioner and Jay Stevens, manager
of the Fire Prevention Bureau of tho
Pacific Coast met with local insurance
agents. City Water Superintendent
Davis, Fire Chief Law ton. and one
representative of the city council
Thursday, and, announced that Med
ford was one of the three towns in the
state scheduled for an increase in in
surance rates, owing to the lack of
adequate fire protection. Tho increase
will be in Ihe neighborhood of 20 per
cent if invoked.

clung to his contention that his gen
eral reputation was bad. He testi
fied that the reputation of the defend

Mrs. Eva Nichols, also testified to
the same.
William Perry, a farmer who knew
Jacks well, testified to threats, and
was asked by Attorney Reames. if
"he sometimes did not doubt the san
ity of Jacks." The court sustained
an objection to this question by the
prosecution.
The defense at the conclusion qf
the session, announced that Us first
witness upon the resuming of tho
trial Saturday morning at 9 o'clock
would be John Nichols, highly respect
ed pioneer, and father-in-law o the
deceased.
