Tha details of the dispute are as follows: ' :On March 13, 1911, Uncle Sam pur chased several lots in Medford for a poatofflco site. Since then a modern poatofflco and federal courthouse building has been erected on tho grounds. At that timo tho abstract- ora, and then United States district at tornoy and the sheriff's office assort ed that the propurty wus free from all incumbrance. In 1916 Jackson county officials de cided to buy in nil property on which taxes had not been paid. An agree ment was made with the city of Med ford to sell to tho city all property within tho city limits to protect tho city on Its street liens. County of ficials found that the taxes on a strip of the postoffico property 20 by 125 .feet or a strip 20 feet wide running along tho alleyway for "125 feet, had not been paid. They were J60.23. - The county took over tho property and attempted to sell It to the city. Fehl brought suit to enjoin the sale arid won out on tho grounds thnt there were no slroct liens against tho .tovernmcnt property. Fehl then Ho noured tUIo for about $145. 'J ho as sessed value of tho property at that time was $900.. Attornoys for Fehl have notified XJnltod States Attorney Lester W. Humphreys that their client owns tho proporty and Intends to tako pos session. Sandefer, agent of the Oregon Anti-Saloon league, in a suit filed at Portland Thursday afternoon by George P. Jones of Portland, through his attorney, Isham N. Smith. Jones alleges that on August 13, near the .McLeod bridge on the high way between Medford and Crater lake, Sandefer stopped him while he wag driving his automobile and made an illegal search of his automobile - and clothes. Snndofor is alleged to have roprc sentod himself to he a deputy from Sheriff Murlburt's office in Portlund with specific instructions to arrest Jones. Jones states that, not caring to bo guilty of resisting an officer, ho submitted to arrest under protest, al though Sandefer had neither search warrant nor bench warrant. News of the arrest was published ill tho newspaper, the complaint al leges, which has caused Jones con siderablo embarrassment. According to the complaint, Jones learned from Sheriff ilurlhurt thai Sandofer is not a deputy sheriff in Multnomah county and that ho was not sent to Southern Oregon to mak tho arrest. Sandefer carries a state agent's commission from tho govern or and works under instruction from W. J. llerwlg, superintendent of the unti-saloon lcagtio in Oregon, uc cording to tho complaint. ON LEGION RATES The eastern railroads have granted a one cent a mile rate to the national American Legion convention in Kan sas City, Mo., October 30th to Novem ber 1st, but the lines in the northwest have so far refused this rate. If their attitude is maintained the many mem bers on the Pacific coast will be ex cluded from attending. Chambers of commerce . and city councils all over the northwest are passing resolutions protesting to the railroads of this district against their action and asking that they grant the same rate as the eastern roads, and are sending copies of their resolutions to tho heads of the railroads. The Medford city council and chain her of commerce, as well as those of Ashland and other southern Oregon cities are asked to pass resolutions at their next meeting. During the past week the Trlgonia well was delayed In setting casing awaiting the arrival of a bull rope wnicn was ordered by wire the 26th and should have been here the 27th, but owing to error by shipper, was shipped by freight in place of by ox- press as ordered; however it should be here today. l no casing is practically set through tho extramely hard forma tion, and with the arrival of the now rope, will be quickly completed.
