Howlett In ins- amu around town last Wednesday aftirivnn V'-,-.k Lewis, our confectionery man called n , at tention to a book lie hold in his hand, and it provcil to -.bo a day book that was used in the old Unite Creek flour ing mills forty-seven years ago when it belonged to tho firm of Emery and Dailey. It contained the names of a reat many, in fact almost all of tiie old settlers In this and surrounding neighborhoods, for at that time 'it was about all the grist mill near here and the farmers would come in from Sams Valley and the. country around whore Medford and Central Point are now situated, bringing in their wheat and exchange it for Hour. At that time the rule was to have the miller take out one-eighth of tho 'wheat for toto and the farmer would then take home with him, if he had good clean wheat, from thirty-eight to forty pounds of flour beside all the bran and shorts and tho screenings. But it was but a short tlmo before the millers adopted a difforent plan and instead of taking out one-eighth they would take all of the flour except thirty-five pounds and give tho farmer a certain part of tho mill Teed they called it,- that was the bran and shorts all run together, and finally they adopted the plan of tak ing all of tho wheat and giving the farmer thirty-five pounds' of flour tor a bushel of wheat. At the tlmo re ferred to I have seen tho road blocked with wagons and teams for an hour at a time, for people coming in from, say Sams Valley via tho Hybce bridge would often bo at the mill by 4 o'clock in the morning In order to ho unloaded tnd get back homo so they could load up again that night. Tho reader will hear In mind that all of the wheat had to bo run through a screen and a small one at that, and all of the cracked wheat and other seeds-taken out before It was weighed, and it would sometimes take several hours to run a load of say a hundred bushels through the screen .and conse quently those living tit a distance had to movo early to get home the same day. Our election passed off very quietly as there were only about one hundred votes cast and the vote for the bonus carried 56 to 41, the legislation bill was defeated by 23 to 74. The Emer gency Clause amendment lost by 41 to 52. Marriage license lost by 3) to 68 and tho women jury bill lost by 23 to 64. So the reader will see that a ma jority of the voters In this- lirecinct seem to think that It is better to let the Portland cllcque that seems to govern the legislature, fix up their little schemes, and some of them arc not so very little and attack the emer gency clnuse, and thus take it out of the hands of the people rather than give the governor ower to veto that clause or part of the hill that they the clique was afraid to submit to a vote of the people. Fritz Peck nnd his mother, Mrs Maggie Peck of Lake Creek, passed through here on their way to Medford. returning the next morning and goln up home on the stage. B. W. Paul of the Electric store. Medford, was out here Wednesday evening tor supper. He was out trying I Erie 5 to secure signers to a petition to have the county call another election to vote to raise 1:17,000 to build houses, etc., on she fair grounds, an additional cxpenso to the taxpayers for the bene fit of a few interested Medfordiles. He met with little encouragement out here for the country people are al- heady tired of paying such heavy j taxes. j Rev. J. F. Drittson requests me to isay that he will preach here on Sun I day, June 19, at the close of the Sun day school. W. M. .IcnUs. talesman Tor N . K. Tanland Co., was here for dinner Wednesday. Mr. Helms of Prospect, came out early Thursday bringing the mail from there and went direct to the gar age to have work done on his car. He brought out Mr. and Mrs. K. II. Price of Portland and they called a taxi rrom Medford to tako them in to Mcdford. There seems to be u great deal of travel on the stages just now and j.,'5many of thoni are strangers looking over the country. Mr. Heckner, the official squirrel IKiisoner. passed through hero Thurs day on his way to tho hills with squir rel ikiIsoii. Peto Young, one of our prosperous farmers, came In Thursday and loft his auto at the W. L. Chlldreth shop to have it overhauled. C. II. Pierce drove in in a one-horse buggy Thursday. He was trying to secure more members ior wie rami Bureau. Wc had our full quota of civil engi neers hero for di'iner Thursday, there was K. E. lludguian, deputy state engi neer, Herbert Nunn, C. C. Kelly and Will .lav and N. .1. Drew, who said lie was not n civil engineer, nnd It. W. Rea. a civil engineer for tho Medford Ditch Co. And we had besides them James Owen and Victor Bursell, tho county commissioners, and five stran gers whose names 1 failed to secure. Tho L. C. C. of Eagle Point met Thursday at the home of Mrs. W. H. Brown on June 9th and there wore about tho usual number of ladies in attendance, although a few of those who have attended the previous meet ings were absent, Mrs. W. H. Brown and Mrs. S. A. Van Hardenberg were the hostesses. The next meeting win be on Thursday. June 23, at tho homo of Mrs. M. L. Pruett. As Mrs. Pruett lives some three miles out in the coun try the arrangement was made for those who have cars to meet at the postonico at 2 o'clock In tho afternoon and take any who wished to attend tho meeting out nnd back; a fine arrange ment. Will tell later who will serve as hostesses. Mrs. M. L. Pruett and her daughter, Mrs. ThoB. Stanley, were bnsluosa callers. Mrs. Merritt and son were trading hero Friday. Mrs. J. W. McKissick and hor aunt, Miss Margaret Prillainan and Mrs. S. A. Van Hardenberg and daughter motored to Medford Friday. R. C. Fariiar and wife were !hero for dinner Friday and were met here by Mrs. Fnrrlar's sister, Miss Martha Porter, who has been teaching tho Derby school, and all went up to their home on the north fork of Littlo Butto Lake Creek postoffice. Mr. nnd Mrs. J. L. Smith, son and daughter of Portland, were also here for dinner. They had been up to McLcod visiting friends. Notice A new law passed by tho last ses sion of legislature provides that ill School Districts of t"ho first class tho Board must provide printed ballots for tho election of Directors. It further provided that you havo tho names ap pearing on this ballot of candidates whoso Certificates of Nomination have been signed by not loss than 3 per cent, nnd must bo at least 10 persons, of tho number of qualified voters vot ing for school directors at the last annual election. These certificates of nomination must bo filed with tho Clerk at least seven days before the dalo of election. Tho parties so nom inated must also file at least 5 days before tho annual election, an accep tance of this nomination. This la especially interesting Just now as tho Annual School Election is to ha held the 3rd a.onday in June, being Iho 20th of the month this year. 88 ADVERTISING RATES Classified Two cents word first insertion; ono cent word each subsequent insertion. r Locals 10c line per insertion; by the week, 7 times, 5c per line per day.
