Robert Miller of Portland was present and gave a very interesting talk about early beginnings in llogue ltivcr valley. He emphasized tho fact that the early pioneers will be gone soon and what is gleaned of tho early history must bo diio us soon as pos sible. Where gold was first discovered Is now only, a conjecture anil has given rise to many differences of opinion. Col. Miller dwelt at length upon the output of gold in the mining days of Jacksonville and said the fact of the great amount of gold taken out had never been given enough prominence and that If eastern capital could be induced to Invest no doubt great quan tities of gold would yet be taken out I as only the surface had ns yet been touched. The figures given out by "Mr. C. C. lleekman of gold bought over Ms counter was about 2S million, the mer chants and others took in about an equal amount. Tho Chinese miners of whom there were thousands took out. of the mines gold to the amount equal to the bank and the stores which gives an amount in round numbers of about 120 millions. He also spoke of some or his Indian experiences east of the mountains. The Historical society hopes to get its organization at Work and begin the preservation of early history this sum mer.
