THE LITTLE TIIK little "i-ecii ieiits where the soldiers sleep, and the sun beams play and t lie women weep, urn covered with flowers today; and between the tentK walk the weary few, who were young nnd stalwart in 'sixty-two, when they wnt to the war away. The little (jrrcn tents are luilt of sod, nnd they are not long and they are not broad, but the soldiers have lots of room; and the sod is part of the land they saved, when the flag of the enemy darkly waved, the symbol of dole and doom. The little preen tent is :i thing divine; the little green tent is n country's shrine, where patriots kneel ami pray; and the brave men left, so old, so few, were young and stalwart in 'sixty-two, when they went to the war away! WALT MASON. CITIZEN'S TRAINING CAMPS. AMEIUCA'S problem is to keep fit. There are millions of well trained ex-service men in the country today, there are thous ands of experienced officers, but the science of war is something that continually changes. It is imperative, therefore, that this fighting re serve should be kept in condition, that new men, particularly officers, should be trained. Sooner or later, the world's financial condition will render a re duction of armaments imperative The same condition will render n large standing army impossible. Hut there is no reason why the train ing of army officers should not continue, for this can be done at the minimum expense and the maximum benefit. This summer the war department will conduct citizens training camps throughout the country. For Oregon, the training camp will be at the Presidio in San Francisco. Jlen physically sound, up to .1." years of age will be given free military training iit these camps, even travelling expenses being paid by the government. There will he ro educational requirements, 1 lit? only requirement being that the ap plicant, have sufficient intelligence to enable him to understand and obey ordinary military commands. Here is a splendid opportunity for young men to enjoy a summer wication without expense, which whatever t lie; future develops, will result in benefit to himself and to his country. The fact can not he too often emphasized that America's success in the recent world war was only made possible by the' conditions that, allowed, months ami months for preparation after war was declared. That condition will probably never occur again. If there is another hvar, it will ;be a quick trigger war, There will be no allies already engaged. Any system of preparedness which can be carried on, without material sacrifice in time nnd money is not only desirable, but until the clouds of strife and discord clear awny, necessary. The citizen's training camps comprise such a system. RipplingRhijiiiGs ly Walt THE BURIED PAST. I'VE MADE nil kinds of dizzy breaks, my past wiis bndly checkered ; but I don't brood o'er old mistakes, or J'ret about my record. Not by remorse a fellow mounts to heights serene, en chanted; what he is now is all that counts Ihc past is dead and planted. I tlo not haunt the mourner's bench, rrnrettiii,' and de ploring but take u saw or monkey wrench and do some useful choriiiR. All virtuous I no my way, a moralist, a winner; nnd sometimes evil gossips say, "Of old he was a sinner; he held high wassail in the dens where Barleycorn was retailing; he carried off a willow's hens, and laughed at her complaining." And I am asked about, such talcs, "Were, once, your nets so rotten?" Ami I say, "Yes; but what avails the ghost of days forgotten? You see me walk the narrow way, and not in byways mazy; and when at. night I hit the hay my conscience is a daisy. I do my work, I pay my debts, I have a hundred uses; I am among the safest, bets this age of ours produces. Today's the only day on earth; its sun will soon be selling; today I show my sterling worth, all other days forgetting." How vain to mourn the by gone years, with soul iby anguish smitten; as Omar says, not lill your tears can wash out what, is written. I do this, feeling that my reputa tion as an accurate speller will hp Jeopardized because of tho fact that I am matched against such an incom petent speller ns Court Il.ill, How ever, you may Inform Mr. Hall, through the medium of the press 01 otherwise, that his challenge is ac cepted. It seems as though this man Hall never will get over talking about the tact that Ml years ago, at a teachers' examination on n basis of 100 per cent as being perfect, he got a grade of r.o per cent In spelling, and he tuiiiKs that, qualifies him to consider himseir In the class or real spellers.
