PAGE THREE . ' K BULGIN REPL! TO ES EOF A whose mind with malice aforethought1 kills. His hands without mortal mind; to aid them could not murder. But it is proven that mind without the aid of hands has killed." And alt through her book In numbers of places in her earlier writings she admits the power And if you keep up your method of attack) and un-C'hristlike and un-ChrU-tian methods I will quit the evangelis tic platform ami take the public plat form, and give my entire time to fight ing Christian Science. You have my prayers that you may see the light of mesmerism and psychic suggestion. 1 have uo right upon you, ail ludlvia You say, sir, that Christian Science juul, hut my warfare is for the truth of does not deny the Atonement, nor the j Clod, the orthodox Bible, the Deity ot -Mr. Theodore Hurkliart: Dear Sir: 1 have understood thai you lCddyites nre such lovely people as you claim, and so did your mother Kddy claim that you never think evil and you never sjeak evil; in fact there Is no evil .but 1 see that you don't hesitate in bold type to call liulgin a liar and that, too, for the slightest provocation. And according to your usual system you do not show any proof of where I lied, hut merely your opinion. I call your attention to the fact, according to your own theory, there Is no evil, and no devil, no sickness or sorrow. Then 1 could not have lied, since a lie is evil, and Jlrs. Kddy says there is no evil. Then liulgin did not lie. No, the old gag that 1 did not take n course of study in Huston 1 did not' because I could not. That sounds very . much like your usual system. I Just did not becauso it could not he. That's a fair sample of your way of dealing with facts.' A thing could not be just because it Isn't. That sounds like a granny woman UO years old, or ti little child of three and a half. You can . say there is no pain, you do say there is uo sickness, and no death. But that does not prove your theory. Every aching tooth, every sick bed, every bit of sorrow, and every creeping old hearso, and every little grave on the billables or this world puts the lie to your theory. Now listen for once t" the real truth. Hero it is In hold type. 1 did go to Boston, Massachusetts .and . study Christian Science four mouths. And all your denial and nil ;j"your saying 1 did not do It because 1 , could not do It, does not prove my i statement untrue. 1 did not, however. 5 pay Mrs. Eddy the $350, neither did I , matriculate as a regular student. I went there, more in the nature of a i. secret service man, sent by my Pre i bytery to give her n lair and unbiased judgment without entangling .myself. I .have talked with Mrs, Eddy several limes, privately licit hat Concord and Boston, and I have heard from her own Jlps nbont all she over had to say on (lie subject of Christian Science. You say in your article, Mr. Theodore, that there . was no such a course for leaders, and never has been. I call your attention to Lawyer Beabody's book, ,)mgd 31, to Iho following state ment: "The collegiate course in Chris tian Science, metaphysical healing, ill . eludes 12 lessons. Class convenes at 10 a. m. The first week six consecu tive lessons. The term continues 31 weeks. Tuition $300. Tuition for all, strictly cash in advance" According to this, Mrs. Kddy must have received . her revelation from Clod -CO.!. Again ydu will find an ndvertlse- 5 ment in. 1SS1. Mrs. Eddy .established j what she called Iho Massachusetts Metaphysical College of Christian Sci ence healing. Her adopted son, her husband, and herself constitute the faculty. In the Christian Science Journal ot September, lS'.Hi, she puts out another advertisement for readers mid those Interested In tho study, and yet yon say, Mr. Theodore, there was no such a course. How do yon feel now in calling d sincere gospel minis ter, trying to do good In (lod's king dom, a falsifier and liar. You better write another article and square your self with the general public. You say in your article that Chris tian Scientists never attack another person or 'creed then what are you now doing? Both attacking a person and tho doctrine. Haven't I a right to defend my faith against tho constant and Insidious atlncks, when you are constantly stealing lambs from our church, when it's n proven fact that !)5 percent of the members of tho Chris- tlan Science church conio out of our j orthodox churches? Either disuffect- ed church members or persons with a j sick body, who nre like il drowning j man grabbing at n straw, leave our j orthodox religion for mere cures of L.the body. We do not deny healing of the body in answer to prayer, but in ! all ages the church has endorsed that. Every time you deliver a lecture, every ! time you put your literature at out door, every 'time .you fill our public reading racks with your literature, is an attack upon us,-. But when I reply in defense of my own faith, then 1 must be called by you, a state reader, a villfler and a liar. This is a fair ear mark of the cult. Now you say in this article that Christian Science denies pychlc sug gestion or hypnotism, but you claim it Is just the opposite. I call your ntten tion to page 179 of Mrs. Eddy s hook of 1S8G she says "The evidence of the power of mind exercised over the body has accumulated such weight : that our courts have to recognize the evf dence that goes to prove commital of crime by the mind. If socalled mind of one mortal has killed another, is it not this mind proved a murderer? And shall not the man be sentenced. Atoning blood of Jesus. You say that Christian Science does not deny the resurrection of our Lord, and that Christian Science does not deny the death and resurrection of Lazarus, and that' Christian Science does not deny marriage, or in any sense of the word make light of It. Just for once, face these facts, and I don't want you to practice what a lawyer would call suit in avoidance, but stick to the text, and tell mo what am I to believe by the following: On page 25. 1911 edition, of Science anil Health, anil paragraph ti. Mrs. Kddy says: "The material blood of Jesus was no more efficacious to cleanse from sin when It was shed UKin the accursed tree, than when il was flowing in His Veins." If that is not I'nitarinisni of the most blasphe mous nature, then I nui Incapable of understanding my Bible, when It says "Without the shedding of blood there Is no remission." Christ died for our sins. It is the blood that maketh an atopement for the soul. Now either .Mrs. Eddy Is wrong, or Clod s word Is wrong. Head again on page 4-1, paragraph 27 Mrs. Eddy says: "His disciples be lieved Jesus to ho dead, while ho was hidden in tho sepulchre whereas He was alive, demonstrating within the narrow tomb the power of Spirit, to overrule mortal material sense." If this Is not a denial of tho resurrection. Mr. Theodore Burkhart, please explain what does It mean? On page 75, Mrs. Eddy says "Jesus restored Lazarus by understanding that Lazarus had never died. Had Jesus believed that Lazarus had lived or died in his body, tlio Master would have Stood on the same plane of belief as those who buried the body, and it could have resuscitated it." Then will you explain, kind friend, if Lazarus was not dead, what was it that smelt bad, for Martha Bald "Uy this tlmo he stlnketh." Now I am merely defending my truth and my cntiso from such insid ious anil bold statements as you have made. Yoli say it's futile to try and convince those who have not an open mind. I would put my side of the question this way it's futile to try and convince those who have no mind at all, for when you attempt to tell mo that all the Catholic priests America, that all the highly educated Episcopalian divines, and that all the Methodist bishops, and all the educat ed Protestant ministers, who do not and cannot drink In this incoherent, disjointed conglomerated pantheistic, Unitarian philosophy of Mary Baker Glover Patterson Asa G. Eddy, dished up hash, are not open-minded, and have no brains at all, is both unrea sonablc, unpliilosophlc, silly, sicken ing and weak. I have read her book through myself -190 thnes, when sick and well. I have read everything that has ever como- from her pen. And It's surely begging the question, Brother Theodore, to say that all of us are a set of fools who are not open minded. Take for an example when it comes to Logic and Science, pago 64, 1902 edition, what she says In regard to marriage "Until It Is learned that Clod Is the Father of all marriage had better continue." Then take what she says in 18!)(i as published by Peahody on page 50 of Peabody's book on Chris tian Science "1 cannot say that I have found very much, sympathy on the part of husband and wife in regard to views upon the marriage' relation. Is marriage nearer right than celibacy. Human knowledge inculcates that It is. If that be true what are you to do with the relation of Adam and Eve in the Garden, nnd Saint Paul's endorse ment of the marriage relation being so sacred that it's like the mystic union between Christ and Ills Bride. Take another fair sumplo of Her inconsistencies on page 10S, 1902 odi tion, "Sin, sickness, disease', death. Is false testimony of false material sense. Then there must be a lot of us, Mrs. Eddy included with us, that have false sense, for she is dead. Another fair sample of your philoso phy, ,ahd the contradiction of the same on page 174, paragraph 21 "Belief is all that ever enables a drug to cure mortal ailments." I asked Airs. Eddy once in Concord, New Hampshire, how she explained that If an innocent child of two years, or a baby of one year, would take arsenic or poison by acci dent, what is it that kills the baby, and she replied it was the operation of other minds, investing the drug with the poison. Now read page 4fil, and see another sample of her philosophy paragraph 12 "If from an Injury or from uny cause a Christian Scientist were seized with pain so violent that he could not treat himself mentally and the scientist had failed to relieve him, tho sufferer could call a surgeon who would give him a hypodermic. Injec tion; then when the belief of pain was lulled he could handle his own case mentally." Now she denies pain and then admits it. She says that drugs have no virtue but sends for a hyio dermic, but the hypodermic must get at the belief of pain, then evidently since belief Is in the head the hypo dermic should he put In the hend. You ask me to swallow that down whole sale as philosophy, theology or com mon sense? Well, I can't do it, and I have the most profound pity for those who do and can; but 1 don't care to be called a liar, fool, falsifier, or a man without an open mind, because I can't take down such stuff, and I serve no tice on you now as a state reader that as long as you keep up your insidious attacks, villifying and personal abuse I shall fight the cult us long us I live. at the cabin on next Wednesday, recently opened ten room in Ashland Juno 1st. Why do you not have missionaries Jeachlng the! heathen to be Christians and why do you allow members of your "church"! (?) to live a life that Is out of harmony with the teachings of Holy Writ? Is it true that Mrs. Eddy disowned her own son at the age of five and gave him to a family that moved out into South Dakota where he lived for thirty years during which time she had no communication with hiin whatever? s that the way a good Christian moth er should treat her own son? These and many other reasons prompt me to defend the gospel of Jesus Christ against such false teachings and false living. Again, is it true that Mrs. Eddy, after sixty years of age, made rour million dollars out of her practice of Christian Science as -i revealed re ligion from God, and is it truo that a Unitarian preacher in Boston revised and re-wrofe her book.
