OPEN UP TUESDAY
The Foley and JIurk shows arrived
by speciul train last evening from
Iteddtng and early this morning the
employees of the amusement aggre
gation were busily engaged inunload
ing and transporting the puraphe
naila to the show grounds opposite
the Southern Pacific depot. The
shows will open tomorrow evening
for a period of five days.
There are many new attractions
with the Foley and iiurk aggregation,
over $00,000 being spent during the
past winter in adding equipment and
amusement devices to I ho already
large assortment. A new seaplane
swing of the latest model accounts
for tho expenditure of $10,000 and a
1921 model whip accounts for a like
amount. The equipment of tho com
pany consists of ten cars, five of them
flat cars carrying Kixteen ltirge
wagons, filled to overflowing with
show paraphenulia.
Tho watchword of the Foley and
Ilurk shows is and always has been
cleanliness of attractions nnd a square
deal to everybody. The fact that the
shows play the same territory year
aftor year and is much sought aficr
by tho big fair associations to fur
nish amusement is evidence that the
policy is adhered to and with profit.
Among the riding devices with the
show are the seaplanes, Ferris wheel,
gnltoptng hoi-He carousal, 1921
model whip, and human roulette
wheel. Among tho shows carried are
tho two-ring circus, crazy house, Ha
waiian village, monkeyland, jungle
land, lobster boy and several others.
Tho company carries an excellent
concert band which will be in evi
dence on tho show grounds each

Our critic says he has taken "the
course of lectures given - by Mrs.
Kddy personalty, in Boston, designed
for readers." That is not true. In
the first place, there are no lecture
courses designed for readers, and
secondly our critic has never had per
sonal instruction under Mrs. Eddy, yot
he persistently repeats this false
statement.

when ho knows full well that while
Christian Scientists reply to misrep
resentations, they do not abuse or at
tack the religious beliefs of others, for

conviction wherever they find it.

misleading statements and unfair con.
elusions contained In those published
criticisms, I cannot refrain from say
ing that I find It difficult indeed to
understand how any self-respectini-person
can utter such vituperation
and yet call himself a Christian. Cer
tain it Is, that Mrs. Kddy never set
our critic any such example. I find
It surprising, too. to find one, who,
claiming to be unprejudiced, admits
that he has "read Mrs. Eddy's book
through thirty times." and yet grasps
so little of her meaning and unable
to see any good In her teachings,,
when thousands of others, intelligent
nnd humhle seekers for truth, have
found healing for both body and mind
by reading the hook only once, and
many by reading but one chapter,
tho chapter on prayer.
Christian science is not fi "religious
system founded on mere health psy
chic suggestion," it does not use nug
gesllon or hyynotism, which aro the
very antipodes of science; it does not
deny Jusuh atonement nor his res
urrection, tho raising of !aarim, nor
tho divinity of Christ, but It explains
these things In a rational nnd logi
cal manner.

Viewed from tho same stand point
the spiritual Interpretation of the
scriptures, Mrs. Eddy's writings are
seen to bo entirely consistent with

Tho word "Rclenco" Is defined as
"knowledge of principles or facts."
Christian Science Is "Science" bn

itual law of spiritual truth,
tho truth about Cod, man, and
tho universe. It is "Christian
becauso it is based wholly upon the
teachings of Jesus tho Christ, nnd it
Is today restoring primitive Chris
tianity in the way of his appointing,
by healing tho sick as well as the sin
ning. There is hardly a community
of any sisio nnywhero in tho country
where thero nre not to be found
living witnesses to tho fact that
Christian Science does both, and that
that it not only heals, but sometimes
does so insnntaneotisly, and not In
frequently after nil other means have
heen tried In vain. These testify, too.
to tho fnct that tho effects of Chris
tian Sclenco as taught by Mrs. Kddy
aro wholly beneficial, that tho pa
tient is In somo degree uplifted mor
ally and spiritually ns well as healed
physically. Should such a helpful In
fluence bo said to bo "pernicious"?
Our critic further says that Chris
tian Science denies "sin and offers a
bonus" In tho way of a healthy body.

Christian Science teaches obedience

mandments, not merely to a part of
them. In Hark 16:17, 18 Jesus
stated what "signs shall follow them
that believe." He was addressing his
disciples, but ho did not say "you,"
but "them:" "them that believe." in
all times to come. That this healing
power to which lie referred was not
confined to his immediate disciples,
is proven by the fact that the Chris
tian Church healed the sick as Jesui.

The "signs" which Jesus enumerat

Tho Bible declares that God made ull
and all ho made was good, and "with
out him was not anything mado that
was made." If sin and disease nve
creations of Ciod. Jesus cuuld not
hnvo overcome or destroyed them,
neither could we, nor would it be
right for us to try to do so. But they
are not Cod-mado. on the contrnry,
they are hut beliefs of the human
mind, which can bo destroyed in con
sciousness. Jcaus characterized all
forms of evil beliefs as untrue, "a
lie," saying of their origin that "he
is a liar and the father of it."
Further Ignorance of Mrs. Eddy's
teachings is displayed when our ciitt':
says they aro "very southing to the
conscience of tho sinner." Christian
Science explains that tho sinner sins
because hu believes In the reality of
sin and its fleeting pleasures, and
continues to suffer from that belief
so long as ho sins. Mrs. Kddy says
in "Science nnd Health with Key to
the Scriptures" on pngo 339 "Only
those, who repent of sin and forsake
the unreal, can fully understand the
unreality of evil." Tho sinner can
find in this teaching nothing what
ever that Is "soothing to his con
science" until indeed ho censes to be
a sinner by forsaking his sin, re
penting and reforming.
Christian Scientists do not seek to
preserve their religious liberty at the
expenso of the safety of their fellow
citizens, nor do they disregard the
rights of others, but they are taught
to obey tho laws of the land. As
Jesus pointed out, wo may "render
unto Caesar tho things which are
Caesar's "and yet render "unto liod
the things that nre Clod's."
Dr. ISulgln finds fault with the
Christian Rclenco conception of Cod.
In Christian Scienco we learn that
"It fa our Ignoranco of Clod, the di
vine principle which produces appar
ent discord, and the right under
standing of Him restores harmony,"
restores harmony to mind and
body. The Christian Science concept
of God attributes, to Him all life,
truth and love, and we find the fruit
of this right concept is good. Let
this tree ho "Judged by its fruits."
"Show me thy faith without thy
works nnd T will show theo my faith

There will be no forum of the Med
ford Chamber of Commerce on Wed
nesday of this week, but the same will
be held at the Holland hotel on Fri
day noon. This change is being
mado to enable the members to hear
the Hon. Henry T. Rniney. Congress
man from Illinois, who will be in
Medford on Friday.
Congressman Kainey Is the ranking
democrat of tho Ways and Means
committee, he being a member of
same for the Inst eighteen years and
therefore considered a man especially
qualified to understand lh opera
tion of congress.
CHIEF OF POLICE
Sunday was n busy day In the
llulgln-l.ewls tabernaclo meetings.
Medford has seen various kinds of
parades, but many saw Sunday for the
first time a church parade. It was an
inspiring sight to see the many hun
dred in line Including .our boys and
girls, as well as the fathers and moth
ers, who were advertising the moral
side of life, which is after all the most
important and essential in community
building. The parade extended from
the Medford hotel to the end of Main
street and doubled back to tho start
ing place. The evangelistic party
headed the procession. Mrs. Hulgln
walked with Dr. Bulgln, being here for
the day. The pastors followed; then
came the band, and people on foot,
with the cars for blocks following.
After the procession the women went
to the Christian church, whore they
listened to a very practical and helpful
address on matters of Interest to wom
en by Mrs. Lewis.
Mr. Lewis talked to the Sunshine
chorus at the Presbyterian church.
The men and older boys filled the
tabernacle, where Dr. Mulgln spoke on
"Wine, Wonion, and Gambling." It
was an arousing appeal to the man-
flood of tho men, and for a clean-tip In
their lives and the life of the commu
nity. Dr. Ilulgln addressed himself to the
evils that prevail not only ln the coun
try at large, but in Medford. Ho han
dled the blind pig business in Medford
without gloves, and blamed the condi
tions to inefficiency of certain officers
who were not making good at this
special point.'
Where you have, said the speaker, a
weak chief of police and a no-account
sheriff your Judiciary Is weak. Noth
ing will so breed anarchy as where the
peoplo violate the laws. Violation of
one law leads to the violating of oth
ers. You will never have better gov
ernment in this valley till yon have
better relations between your chief of
police and your sheriff. The saloon is
gone, but the blind pig still remains.
I wnnt. to seo a good Lnj; and Order
league of at least 300 good men formed
to see that the laws 01 your city are
enforced. This valley needs a higher
moral public sentiment. If you want
men of a high class to move here you
must got rid of your blind pigs and
your gambling. If a good law cannot
bo enforced then the law enforcement
officers are in collusion for an officer
to permit liquor to be sold is to admit
weakness.
If you have a sheriff and a chief of
police that can get a man who com
mits murder, or a' man who steals,
then if he does not catch a man who is
a bootlegger he Is cither Inefficient in
office, or in collusion with others In
office. Give me the right kind of men
and I will clean up Medford in two
weeks. If the officers can't stop boot
legging let them say so and we will
put In Borne who can. Every person
who buys bootlegging whiskey Is a
partner in the crime. You need not
tell me that officers of tho law cannot
lock up 108 quarts of whisky so it can
not bo stolen over night.
The evangelist dwelt upon tlie evils
of gambling, nnd of immorality, all of
which were well received nnd appre
ciated. Tho entire message should
make for cleaner and better things In
our community.
The Presbyterian young people
served a fine luncheon to the young
peoplo of the churches at 6 p. in. Dr.
Ilulgln again spoke to an audience that
more than filled tho tabernacle at 7
P. m. on "The Unpardonable Sin." The
message showed how God longs to
save every man, but man himself by
long, persistent willful disobedience
and neglect makes this Impossible,
and serves to produce a condition
where the Holy Spirit is powerless to
move the heart and mind of man.
When man gets Into that slate he has
committed the unpardonable sin, be
causo he is hardened to nil Influences.
Ho resists the Holy Spirit till finally
the Holy Spirit refuses to make any
more visits, knowing that it is useless.
Ono may never know when saying no
will seal his fate, and make further
visits of God useless, but that time
tuny come to any person, nnd has to
very many. When that time comes It
Is useless to try to be religious, for the
Holy Spirit has departed.
More than thirty at tho closo of this
strong nppoal came forward.
Tonight Dr. Hulgin has a message of
special interest to all on "God's Mea
surements of Man." Tuesday will be
High School night. Tuesday and Wed
nesday at 2 p. m. Mr. Lewis will speak
at the Tabernacle on tho Rible.
