Can you afford to ignore all these people who are constantly watching the classified columns of The Mail Tribune in order to fill their many wants? Start at once and use this Advertising Medium ASHLAND IS WELL LIT UP; HAS BIG SURPLUS OF iUICE ' ASHLAND, May, 23. -The- great white way" is resplendent with elec tric llehtlng effects municipally, evou this early In th.e season, streets being in a blaze o glory, from the Plaza to Ernici-BYiHe and beyond. Street light ing, problems present an anamoly. fcer-e. Tha question 1b. not how to conserve the current, but how to con sume It, there being aii excess of juice Troni month to month over normal re quirements. The city pays, as a min imum, six hundred dollars per month t-"200 per year to the Calirornia Orcgon Power company, for current on a light and power basis. By virtue of this agreement the corimration actual ly -withdrew from the local field inso far as asking for any further franchise privileges, its relation to this munici pality solely remaining ' as a 'Whole saler of juice, but It established a minimum supply, or price rather, which the city is to pay monthly. The municipal plant is humming away also, actually booming during the pres ent high water stage. The result is that. the city plant supplies light and power to such an extent that the California-Oregon minimum is not more than half used up. In other words, we are paying $600 per month to the cor poration, and using about half the amount to which the city is entitled, owing to the activities of the auxiliary plant. The remedy for this existing state of affairs appears plausible enough, and that Is- simply to shut down the city system, using it to sup plement the supply In emergencies. This could have been done under the old plan when it was operated upon the monthly wage system; but some time ago several employes entered into a contract with the city to oper ate the plant, the time not yet expir ing. The Object in entering into such a contract is not generally understood, but is supposed to have been in order to harmonize certain complications re garding the employment of labor on a skilled technical basis. The Ashland electrical superintendent is the high est paid among heads of various city departments, receiving $200 per month which is a pretty fail' wage consider ing reductions being made all around in the faco of the high cost of electri fying, which does not seem to partici pate in reduced standards as applying generally. The contract as affecting the city plant is nominally renewed from year to year, and in the mean time, while the electric current is so abundant, our streets are carrying a peak load of illumination, reminding one of the carnival and roundup per iods of former days, just in order to use up a supply of juice which has to bo iPaid for under existing conditions. At all events, the old town is well 'Jit irp." Certificates of honor, npplying to 51 students of the public schools, have beon awarded recently for perfect at tendance and punctuality during the term just dosed. Junior high "gradu ated" 29 in this respect, and Haw thorne school 22. The certificates are signed by State , Superintendent Churchill and County.- Superintendent Homes. Also about a like number of rjupils of 'junior high ' received' diplo mas for successfully passing examina tions in the eighth grade as outlined by Btate requirements. These papers admit the-holder thereof to any high school' m the state, and tho winners thereof lo a great, measure- will consti tute the freshman clusa of the local high school. . The Southern Oregon Osteopathic society was addressed on Monday, May 23, by Dr. Lillian Whiting, of Lus Angeles. Clinical obstetrics and a talk to prospective mothers wore chief topics discussed, the speaker demon strating "special technique" as em ployed under osteopathic auspices. , Funeral services of the late Benton Bowers, who died Saturday evening, will be held at Elks temple, Tuesday afternoon at two o'clock, under aus pices of that order. Deceased was a native, son of Jackson county, and a self-made man in the sense of inn-severing industry through the various in dustrial channels, not only in Oregon but also other states, his property holdings being extensive and widely diversified, and it was but recently that his title to valuable mining inter ests in Texas had been confirmed by the United States courts after years of litigation.
