MEDFOITO 3kHTL TRTBTTXE. MEDTOTTO. OT?F.OONT. SATURDAY, MAY 14. 1021 PXGE T11UKE IS ATTACKED BY Rr. Rulgln's lecture at the taber nacle last evening on Christian Sci De drew a large and interested aud ience. All seats were taken; others vera, standing and a few left unable to get' a seat.- For over two hours Dr. flidgln spoke in his forceful and log ical way on the subject, which he has Studied for many years. In many places after Dr. Bulgin leaves a reply is made, when the speaker is not pres ent to reply, bo be offered the platform to Christian Science people or lecturer dividing the time between them and himself. The lecture in full was in a printed form for distribution. No service will be held this evening. At !:30 p. m. Sunday "Dr. Bulgin gives one oflhis Chautauqua lectures on "The l.eas Cow," and at 5 p. m. a union jounc people's meeting will be held at the Christian church; lunch will be served by the Baptist youne people. At 7 p. m. Dr. Bulgin speaks on Hell; Is There a Hell, and if so Can a God of kove Send Any One There? Many 8re turned away Sunday evenings, so all must be on time to get Beats. Dr. Bulgln'a lecture on . Christian Science last night was In part as fol lows: "1 am not prejudiced, for I have studied Christian Science, having read nil the literature sent out by the .Moth er Church, have read Mrs. Eddy's book over thirty times, and have taken the course of lectures given by Mrs. Eddy neroonally, In Bob ton, designed for readers. I am not fighting another Church, for Christian Science denies All the fundamentals of the Church of Christ, and I have a right to tear the badge of the Cross and Crown from such a sect. I am not attacking this fleet, but Blmply answering the attack they are making continually upon my church and my Christ. Christian Science is neither Chris tianity, for they deny that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, nor is it science, for they know nothing of science or its practices.. Christian Science is not a religion according to the bible and Christ. In her book Mrs. Eddy Bays, ''The material blood of Jesus was no more efficacious to cleanse from Bin when it was shed upon the 'accursed tree' then when' it was flowing In his e(us ob he went daily about His Father's business." This is a direct blow at the atonement of Christ. Again the, Bays ".His disciples believed Jesus to be dead while he was hidden In the sepulcher, whereas He was alive, demonstrating within the narrow tomb the power of the spirit to overrul. mortal, material sense." If this is true, Jesus was the biggest' hypocrite in history, for He allowed His disciples to suffer and die for the fact of His resurrection. , Again Mrs. Eddy says, "Jesus restored Lazarus by the under standing hat Lazarus had never died, not by an admission that his body had died and then lived again. Had Jestis believed that Lazarus had lived or died In his body, the Master would ha vie stood on the same plane of belief as' those who buried His 'body, and He could hot have resuscitated 1(." ;Afteri repeatedly denying thereality ot'p'aln. nd Buffering, Mrs. Eddy says ,:'.'lf from - an Injury or from an cause a. Christian.. Scientist were seiz ed with, pain bo violent that he could not treat, himself mentally and the iffctentlsta have failed to relieve him the sufferer could call a surgeon, who would, give him a hypodermic Injec tion.. Then' when; the belief of pain was lulled,- he ,could .handle his own case mentally.' ...Thus It Is that we prgfte all' things and hold to that which is jjooii," This la just an example of (he'.coiiiradictions'ln the teachings of Mr. f Eddy. . I suppose that we are to prove all things and bold fast to the Ityfcbdctihio. jf'V; -- Conception of God ptit' the most invidious teaching is th. conception of God.' She says, to quotd ; again "The .eternal Elohlm In cludes' the forever, universe. The name J?khln is. In the plural, but this plur-alty6r- Spirit does not Imply more than-on? God,, nor does it Imply three persons,, in. one. It relates to the one ness, the ,lri;unity of Life, Truth and Lo.ve? ..This Is the rankest sort of unllariBm.; . Th.e bible says God is Ti'lfilty.la personality. You ask why' does Christian Science grow; If It is hot right? Let me ask you why did Brlgham Young, Mahomet and Russell and all other sects grow? These religious sects deny sin and of fer a bonus. Morinanism offei the bonus of sensuality; Kusselllsm offers a no-hell theory, and EdUyism offers a healthy body. Christian Science is not a religion; it is not a science; it is not medicine; it is not Christianity: it is not biblical. The Eddyites hide be hind personal liberty and insist that health laws are an interference with religious liberty. There are other people's liberties and safeguards which are prior to their claims of so called religious liberty. A man's per sonal liberty leaves off where another man's 'personal injury begins. During the "flu" epidemic in Los Angeles all the churches were ordered closed. Now as the creed of the Scientists is that there is no sickness there could of course be no death and therefore no need of the "ban." They sought to violate the law by opening their churches, and one church made a test of that law. Suppose that the majority of the city government had been Scien tists! Many of the Scientists died, and stories are told of how they called at night physicians, who were to leave their cars a block or more away. Why all this Christian Science? Why not mental science and let everybody practice it, and not make a religious system founded on a mere health psychic suggestion? Direct From God Mrs. Eddy claims that sht has re ceived her teachings from God, as she once said, "1 should blush to write of Science and Health With Key to the Scriptures' as 1 have, were it of hu man origin, and I apart from God its author, but as lwas only a scribe echoing the harmonies of heaven in divine metaphysics, I cannot be super modest of the Christian Science text book." Thousands are taught and do believe that God literally dictated the contents of this book to Mrs. Eddy. This is the saciiliglous lie UHn which Mrs. Eddy has reared her whole fraud ulant superstructure. Mrs. Eddy has so taught, her followers to believe that there is no sickness, pain and Buffer ing that many mothers permit their children to suffer without the slightest effort to relieve their pain. Mean while the sickness Is real; the suffer ing Is real, and after protracted suffer ing the child dies without doing any thing to relieve Its pain. . All disease. Mrs. Eddy declares, is an effectatlon of the mind. Any cure through drugs is caused by faith in the drugs and not through the drugs themselves. Believe that you are well, and you will be well, is the theory. Alas, were it true, but it is not. Sin, sickness, death are Illusions. If this be true, then crime, which is only another name for sin is only a belief of the mortal mind. Can we bring ourselves to believe that sin is only an Illusion? The teachings of Mrs. Eddy are very soothing to the conscience of the sin ner. Why then should one bother about sin, if it is only. a dream? Every thinking man knows that Christ died for something more than a mere fig ment of the mind, if sin is nothing why then did Christ die on the cross? Y NEAR EAST RELIEF v.. Garnett made the following statement today regarding Dr. Bulgin: ".Medford has never had a man that could hold the people like Dr. Bulgin, one who can prove the divinity of Christ outside the Bible; one who can prove that the Bible is so Inspired that its teachings can not be dlsproven or wiped out; gets his knowledge not from books or teachlnga but from God, and much good has already been done and much more will be done. "H. C. GARNETT." I BY 12-11 E Th Methodist team added another victory to their credit last evening, when they defeated the BaptiHts 12 to 1 ut Jackson field. J'arks and AVhll lock pitched for the Uaptists and Franklin and Sasnett for the victors. Rev. Sasnett pitched his usual high class ball and was well supported by his entire team. Xunzman -caught a fine came for the Methodists, neveral t lines stopping frltd pitches that would have let in runs. The game was fast and free from any wrangling or quarreling. Both teams hit the ball hard and fielded well. At the Page. Gladys Walton,, who. makes, her screen debut to Medford audiences to morrow in "Rich Olii, Poor Girl,' Is a little Portland girl. At the age of ton she was attending school In the Oregon metropolis, and at the age of sixteen she was visiting a cousin in Los Angeles. Krom here on Gladys Walton's story is the sort that tempts hun dreds of good-looking girls to come to Southern California In search of fnme and fortune in the movies. For Gladys is one of those very few girls who hRve ever been "asked" to go Into pictures. Being an expert swim mer and diver she was cast for a part In a comedy. This was all great fun for" Miss Walton, who expected to re turn to school 1n Portland and tell her classmates about her wonderful expe rience. But she remained In pictures. Her advance was rapid and in less than a year after her frlst appearance before the camera she was playing principal roles. Her first starring part was as the little circus girl in "Pink Tights," whl'h will be shown here some time in June, and so em phatic was her success in that role that it augured a stellar career (or her. CALIFORNIA GLEE CLUB NAT TONIGHT The program of the University of California Glee club differs materially from that presented by most college Glee clubs. There are serious songs, college songs, plantation songs and humorous songs by the club of course, but the main feature of the program is the vaudeville acts. Director Morse does not allow an act to go on until the actors have acquired the necessary finish in their work. There is nothing amateurish about the Glee club's pro gram. i Owing to their wide experience and numerous appearances on the stage the members of the club have all acquired the aplomb of professionals. Particularly is this noticeable In the case of Charles Strlckfadden, saxo phone soloist, Dave Pbennlg, violinist. Harold Glrvin, singer of character songs, and Ross Himes, who dances and sings. Tha Glee club will give their varied program at Natatorium tonight at 7:30. 41 Bronchial Trouble Caused Anxiety No medicine has a better reputation than Foley's Honey and Tar for quick ly relieving coughs, colds and croup.
