LONDON, May 5. Well armed Pol
ish elements In upper Silesia have
forcibly taken possession of a wedge
shaped region the base of which la the
former German Polish frontier and the
upex of which ha reached Gross
Strehlitz, It Is declared in advices re
ceived here. The cities of Tarnowitz,
Kocnlgshuettc, Kattowltz, ltybnlk,
liatlbor, Beauthen and Lublinilz are
Bald to be in the hands of the Poles,
who have reached the Oder river and
lire marching toward the northwest in
the direction of Oppeln.
Dispatches from Silesia assort the
Polos, angered by reports that the
Interallied plebiscite commission had
recommended the awarding of only
the regions of Pless and Kybnik in
southeastern Silesia to Poland, have
declared their Intention to ueizo the
whole region.

ciated Press) I'olish industrial un

tho insurrectionary movement in
upper Silesia, dispatches indicate that

urday as a sign of protest against the
rumored recommendation of the in
ter-allied commission giving I'oland
only two of the industrial districts.
The miners through a federation
representing 300,000 workers, have
telegraphed a protest to Mr. JJoyd
fleorge. the British prime minister,
declaring the members of the federa
tion stand for the joining of the upper
Silesian industrial renter with Poland.
All the labor parties of upper Si
lesia, the dispatches declare, are sol
idly back of Adalbert Korfanty, the
former Polish plebiscite commis
sioner, in the insurrectionary move
ment. This has resulted in the an
nouncement that Minister of Iibor
JamkoWHki had resigned ua a member
of tho Witos cabinet.
Tho council of ministers is prepar
ing a note to the allies on the situation.
Dispatches yesterday reported that
while order had been restored in Kat
towltz and other towns fighting was
continuing between Poles and Oor-
mnns in various parts of the country,
with allied troops preventing the
movement from spreading.

ment Issued here today by tho Insti
tute of American Meat Packers said
that if the tone of trade in the packing
industry was any barometer of
changes in general industrial condi
tions, American business could find
some cause for ' encouragement in
April developments. It was stated
that some Luropean countries had
turned again to America for moat and
that there was "considerable evidence
that traders had ceased to be afraid
to buy."
