INANSWKR (o what is the matter with the railroads, experts seem to overlook the motor car anil motor truck. The recent shipment motor cars to Medford from Portland by motor truck, the complete elimination in recent years of iiiterurhan traffic on the Southern Pa cific in this valley, the sensational increase of automobile, tourist travel, in all directions and at all times, supplies one of the main causes of railroad depression. This does not mean the immediate juiikiiifr of the. railroads, but it does menu' the ultimate elimination of the short haul, which ten years ago supplied a material portion of railroad revenues. Colloctlvoly It seems next to Im possible to accomplish anything for Hosoburg. TIIHHK are in the I'nited States at present 11,0(10,0011 iinnal iiral iud aliens. From present indications, the total amount of immiKratioil for the year eiidin,' next June 30, vyill he over 800,000. Millions more are eager to come. Less than three per cent of the immigrants that have been coming since the war are farmers. .Nearly all of them are flocking -to the already over crowded industrial cities, .joining the alien population and threatening the national health, ideals, institutions and standard of living more than ever. In these circumstances it is easy to understand the insistent de mands for haste in tightening the immigration laws, and the general approval given by native Americans to the pending restriction bill. That bill would hold Kuropean immigration from May 10 of this year to June HO, 1!)J2, down to three per cent of the number from any par ticular country who were already here in 1910. Chairman Johnson of the house immigration committee estimates that this would let in a possible total of ,'55,000. That is plenty. If such action is to be criti cised at all, it is because of its liberality. If government ever succeeds in operating on a scientific basis, we may attain to tin immigration system whereby all our adopted citi zens will be hand-picked by American representatives in their native land, and allowed to come to America only at such times and in such quantities as they are wanted, and will be assigned and distributed, on their arrival, to the particular sections and industries that can use them. Canada already has made a good beginning at such a plan. xioorgo Chamberlain, former sen ator from Oregon, has been definite ly appointed n member of tho ship ping hoard by .President I larding.
