American pol itics, foreign crop reports and grain belt weather combined today to force prices higher on the Board of Trade. Slay wheat recorded an advance of live cents a bushel over yesterday's closing price and other grains and pro visions were pulled along with wheat In the future trading. There was a regular scramble to buy wheat at the start of the market but professional and trade orders to sell halted the initial advance when May wheat touched $1.25. Within the next hour, however, the traders heard that official reportB Indicated the drought in India had 'wiped out .the exportable wheat surplus in that country, that the Argentine crop would be 29,000,000 bushels less than last year's and that a steady drought of six. months in France had affected the crops there adversely. These factors, taken with storm re ports and forecasts for freezing tem perature over the middle west grain belt in this country, were too much for the bears. They scurried to cover and May wheat went to $1.27 a bushel before the m vement was checked. Profit taking at that figure then took half a cent off the advance. N. Y. Stocks NEW YORK, April 16. Stocks were active and strong at the opening of the week-end session, short covering giv ing momentum to the further advance. Oils, stools, motors were the dominant features, rails making only nominal Bains. Within the first half hour ad vances of 1 to 2 y points accompanied the .purchases of Mexican Petroleum, General Asphalt, Crucible and Vana dium Steels, Inspiration Copper and United Fruit.
