Marooned citizens worn out raking "i old wins and rub bish', spurred on by Col. Kurgonl, nml Dm report that it bid tin of hootch had been discovered in a liruslipilo. Let llic iiiininiiiiii requirements of Metlford's necessary chari table organizations lie totalled, then solicit contributions to make up this total, with tin' explicit understanding tliat no more drives will lie sanctioned or supported. In tliis way, ami in ths way only, can tlie h-ivc pest, inherited from tlie war, be annihilated. Jlcdl'oiV; can not escape, and we don't believe a majority of the people wish to escape, certain obligations ol a charitable nature, which arc necessary in every community. Hut this does not mean met ioning all the campaigns contemplated, nor blindly allowing in- crested parties to determine the amounts necessary in their partieu- ir departments. There must be elimination, co-ordination, and con centration, and the only practical mcthuil toward tins end, as we ee it, is the creation of a community chest, placed in the hands of a omniittee, that can be depended upon to eliminate duplication of ef- ort, pare the demands down to the bone, anil in general cut the t,rar- menl to the available cloth. f something of this sort is not done, then we can see no escape roni the drive epidemic, for as far as discovered, the recent legisla ii re passed no anti-drive law. J I" there were no charitable demands which must be met, if there were no organizations established, whose oiilinnanee the public welfare demands, the drive bug might be starved, by simply cutting off the money supply. nl this is not the case, and unforliinalely promises never to be the case. "We believe there are hundreds of people in Medford who would contribute liberally to a drive-to-end-drives, who would gladly roller a liberal amount if they knew that such amount would end all iemaiuls lor at least a year. They must also be satisfied Hint the community fund thus raised, will lie disbursed Willi discrimination and economy, with a rigid ob servance of what is absolutely needed, and the selection of the proper ommiltee can establish this assurance. The question is an important one, anil worthy of extensive public onsideratioti. Toward that end this paper gladly offers its columns discussion, ami communications regarding a community chest, ire hereby solicited, it being understood that such eoiiiiiiuiiiealions to ivailable in this paper should not exceed .'100 words. A DRIVE TO END DRIVES. rVHITE DESCRIBES YOU CAN GET MOST ANY OLD THING AT MOST ANY OLD TIME AT DE VOE'S Opening arguments by state and de fense were made, and a jury finally se lected la the case of Lark N. Evans, on trial before Judge D. V. Kuyendall of Klamath county, in tho circuit coift-t this morning. The jury selected after an entire day of questioning and cross questioning, in which every ehallengo allowed by law was used, is as follows: Kort Hubbard, Medford, merchant. To lecuro it a special venire of twelve was oxbaiisted. In his opening statements to the jury, District. Attorney Kawles Moore told tho jury tho well known story of the alleged crime, how W. (5. The defense filed an objection lo this statement to the Jury. Attorney (ins Newbury for tho do feuse In his opening remarks told the jury that lie would prove by witnesses and tho records of Medford firms that at the lime when White alleges Kvans was holding him up he was engaged in putting a vacuum tank oil the Itluo Ledge mine nuto, and will account for his movements on the day of the al leged ciline III this city. This Is the new evidence upon which tho supreme court granted a new trial, and W. H. Coleman, Sam Sundry, Wilbur Antipole, Charles P. Talent and .Mrs. What have been subpoenaed. Sales and time rec ords of the llincs Snider and A. W. Walker garages and sales departments will he Introduced in support of tlie contentious. Tlie defense will endeavor, according to its chief counsel, lo show that al most at the hour set as lilt time for the commission of the alleged crime, Kvans was working on the Blue Ledge car, and that the work was being done on die complaint of xitn Sandry that tils machine would not climb-thc Jack sonville hill. Ill make thai car climb the Jack-! to a sonvllle hill." Attorney Newbury told I B i the Jury, Kvans remarked to Sundry, fci alter an Investigation. "What she needs Is a new vacuum lank." Hefore the first testimony. Prosecu tor .Moore rciuested that all witnesses for the defense be excluded. Attorney Newbury countered with tho request that all witnesses for the state be ex cluded. The court ruled that all wit nesses for both sides he excluded from the court, with the exception of the prosecuting witness and the parents of Hie defendant. The first witness called by the state was V. U. White, victim of the holdup und kidnapping, a resident of Grants l'ass, and a man past middle age. Al most Willi his first words ho identified Kvans as his assailant. He told of his journey by auto from Grants Pass to Jacksonville, and of being tied hand and foot in an abandoned prospect hole. Shortly before noon cross exuminn lion by defense begun, and questions DAY IS CONCLUDED As the contracts between the mer chants and the Trade Expansion com mittee of the Medford Chamber of Commerce expired on last Wednesday and because there has been some delay in merchants getting together on a re vised campaign for trade expansion, no weekly bargains are being collectively offered this week. Some of the merchants will continue giving Wednesday bargains whether or not it becomes an organized cam paign as they have found that by so doing they have made Wednesdays their second best business day of the week, whereas in the past that day has been the poorest. A meeting of all the merchants will be called very soon for tho discussion of trade expansion methods.
