K. Core. In speaking to this large class, Mr. Core said in part: "That all "good Pythians should some times employ Introspection in order to ascertain how truly they live up to the obligations they assumed In becoming members of the order." He referred to the unrest now filling the world, and reminded his auditors that now, as never before, was there need of broth erly love among men. Pythianlsm, he said should not be confined to the lodge room alone, but Bhould be prac tised In the dally life of each member in order that the world may know that the' altruistic principles which the or der Inculcates, that the Ideals for which It stands, are neither ethereal nor 'academic, but definite and praetl-J cal and capable of being applied to everyday affairs. - He concluded by calling Pythianlsm oue of tho greatest forces in tho world. On Monday evening, Janimry the 31st, at 0:30 p. m. the lodge will give a banquetjn honor of the new knights and It is expected that there will be the largest attendance in the history of the local lodge. This close vote Indicates that this troublesome matter will prove one of the real bones of con tention of the present session. The Iosslbilities Involved In such a nites tion for political pulling and hauling, log-rolling and trading are almost un limited, and it was on the ground of keeping this situation out of the pres ent session that the. opponents of the resolution made, their fight. Moth Rep resentatives Carter and Sheldon voted against the resolution. . ' Drifting Match'. The third week of the legislative ses sion opens with a continuation of the drlfting match between house and sen ate. If the record of previous sessions is to be maintained, bills will have to come In faster during tne next ten days than they have during the past two weeks. For the first time within the memory of old-timers, the number of bills introduced by the thirty sena tors exceeds the number introduced by the sixty house members. There are two or three big fights looming ahead. One will be over the program for the development of the Port of Portland, another over tho re apportionment of legislative districts and another over tho tenure of office for Portland school teachers. For the first time in many sessions, highway and fish mutters bid fair to be settled without serious controversy. Carter Is Busy The Jackson county delegation is pursuing tho even tenor of its way. Representative Carter Is givlug his time almost exclusively to the two im portant problems of the highway pro gram and reapportionment. There At the Rialto With several notable contributions to the screen already accredited to him, Lionel Uarrymoro has without a doubt made his finest performance for the silent drama in "The Devil's Gar den," which opened at the Rialto the atre yesterday. That Lionel is tho most versatle of the llustrlous Barry-more-Drew family Is demonstrated by his acting in this remarkable photo play, which is based on the well known work of W. B. Maxwell. He is ably supported In the leading feminine role by nis wife; Doris llankin, who has the part of tyavis, an upper servant In the Household of Lord Barradine. The story is powerful in theme. It emphasises the moral that unchecked temper and passion bring their own penalties. . seems able to guess. Portland will cer tainly receive larger rei resentatlon than at present, though probably not much as her relative population would, strictly speaking, entitle her to. Mr. Sheldon has been looking after tho Medford armory matter and two or three other questions of local Inter est. Ho has Introduced a bill requiring county treasurers to report to their county courts monthly as to the banks In which county funds are deposited and the securities held against such deposits. He has also introduced a bill exempting highway bonds In tho state from taxation, which, If it becomes a law, should make these bonds saleable at a somewlrat higher price. Ho has ulso got through the house a memorial to the weather bureau asking that the frost-warning service during tho crit ical spring season be maintained in this valley. Free Text Books One of tho meusures in which Sen ator Thomas was particularly Interest ed that of free text-books was shot Into the senate hopper by Senator Banks of Portland before Thomas got his measure whipped into shape. S"rt-(j ator Thomas is tuklrig an" active part in general state legislation and Is wait ing for the measures of local Jackson county Interest to come over from the. house when he will take caro of them in the senate. The compromise agreement respect ing Rogue river fishing will probably pass both houses without contest. Sen ator Thomas and Representative Shel don introduced Identical bills covering this compromise and the Sheldon house bill has already passed. GROWTH IN 1920 The most remarkablo disclosures of the growth and Importance of the Med ford public library slneo tho Inception of county service were made by the librarian, Miss Clara Van Sant at the forum of the Medford Chamber of Commerce yesterday noun. With the establishment f county units in tlie mnaller Incorporated towns and by furnishing books to the various school districts, tho library has been the means of serving the residents of the county the same as residents of the city have enjoyed. Thru tho county service the library board has found it possible to purchase 17U0 new hooks dining 1920 against some 300 new ones purchased In 111 19 and every department, has shown a re markablo percentage of increase in the service to the people. An index of the various publications is on file ami should any citizen desire to get -information on any subject, the service of tliOslibrurlan is solicited. Clayton I.. Tho production, "Nineteen and Phyl lis," p:iened an engagement at the Page theatre yesterday matinee, pro viding a most wholesome and refresh ing .entertainment, it Is a delightful story of youthful romance. In : "Nineteen and Phyllis" Ray makes something of a departure from his fuvorite role of a rube. He is seen as a town dandy, Andrew Jackson Cavunaugh, whose greatest aim in life is to duzide with his gorgeous attire the eyes of the fair young miss whom he some day hopes to win. Opposite Charles Ray In the leading feminine part is pretty little Clara Horton, who In the role of Phyllis iglves a delightful characterization. Lincoln Stedman,- the jovial fat boy of the films, has the role of Jimmy Long, Andrew's rival in love. The balance of the cast is made up of George Nichols, Cora Drew, Frank Norcross and DeWitte C. ' Tho following editorial comment ap peared in tho Oregonlan of Jan, 26th:' The example cited by the governor, the Seaside-Cannon Beach highway, is only one of a number which indicate conclusively that the time for action has come if an important heritage is to be preserved. Co-operation with the federal government seems to be assured, as Is Illustrated in connection with an order of the commissioner of Indian affairs, and there is plenty of evidence of local helpfulness. The Medford chamber of commerce, In firming an association to prevent fur ther destruction of stately trees and natural shrubbery along the highways of Jackson county, has also set an example of pioneer community effort In this direction. . Another splendid example of the Mull Tribune us an advertising me dium, together with the unsuspected fact that there may be a scarcity of dogs In Medford and tho valley Is shown by the fact that about fifty Jackson county people want to adopt a Collie mule dog, notwithstanding that the city and country seem to be full of all kinds of canine pets from the blooded variety to the lowly mongrols and seniles mostly the hitter. The following small advertisement, which was loft by an unknown man in this office Inst Saturday evening ap peared in tho Mail Tribune on Monday aiid Tuesday: "Wanted A good home for a flno largo colllo male dog.
