WEIVFOTITI mTC TTirRUirfl. fTTOTTrjRT). OltF.fiOX. FRTDAY. MAY 1020. STKJl TERES FEDERAL SUGAR The Medford henring against the Utah-Idaho Beet Sugar company on the charge of unfair competition and conspiracy in restraint or trade, came to an end unexpectedly late yesterday afternoon. The federal trade commis sion party will leave Saturday morn ing for San Francisco to continue the hearing there next week, will go to New York city to hear other phases I of the case, and from there will go to Salt Lake City to finish taking testimony, and where the hulk of the evidence of the defense will he heard. There is a possibility that the party will return to .Medford at a future date to take other testimony here. It is not known why the hearing here was discontinued, hut the an nouncement that adjournment had heen taken to San Krancisco created surprise, as it had been expected that it would take several days more at least to hear further .Medford and Grants Pass testimony. It was com mon talk that the government would place Colonel J. F. Mundy on the stand and that his direct testimony and cross examination would probab ly take up two days. There is a pos sibility that ho will he summoned either to San Francisco or Salt hake city to give his testimony. II. C. Carnett was the last witness examined yesterday afternoon, lie testified along the lino that the T'lah Idaho company officials had given the .Medford business men to under stand thut. if a 5000 sugar beet, grow ing acreage was signed up in the val ley a factory would be located at Jledford. Tho testimony of the previous wit ness, Franklyn S. nramwell of llrants Pass, was interesting. lie was put on the stand by Special Attorney Heer for the commission, who showed him certain copies of correspondence be tween himself and tleorge E. Sanders of Salt Lake City, which presumably was obtained from Sanders' letter files, and which llratnwell identified. .Mr. Dramwell was field man with Alexander Xihley in tho efforts to establish a sugar beet factory in the Itogue itiver valley, and he told of the details that led up to the final location of tho factory at Grants Pass by the Nibley organisation known. as the Oregon-Utah Sugar company, which was later taken over by the Utah-Idaho company. .Mi"' nramwell told that1- early in 1914 Colonel J. F. Mundy worked with himself and Alexander Txibley DECORATION DAY PROGRAM CENTRAL Memorial day will be observed at Central Point on Monday, May SI. A high er wheat market tho past two days was reflected in an advance of 25 cents a barrel for flour at one of the mills here today. Family patents in carload lots in its-pound cotton sacks were quoted at $14. BUILDING 10 BE CLEANED, PAINTED Tlio Chamber of Commerce rooms-' are to receive a thoro renovation and painters will take charge this next week. This was decided at a recent meeting of the board of directors after they had carefully considered the needs of the quarters. The grain display will be removed and as the crop conditions are so favorable this season, a very good exhibit of grains and grasses will bo available after the harvest season. Fanners who have good crops of grains, are requested to save several sheafs for exhibit pur poses and they should notify the man agement of the chamber that the same may be obtained from them. There will be a good mineral dis play shown, yet the same can be con siderably improved by tho co-operation -of the miners of this district. The mineral wealth In this locality i coming into its own faster than the people of iledford realize and there fore there should be every encourage ment in Us development. Outside of a few photographs of the timber tributary to .Medford, there Is nothing on hand at the ex hibit room to show of this wonderful resource. A section of a big log, or several largo logs, placed on tho out side of the building so that the same may be seen by the passengers on tin1 trains passing thru would be an im pressive reminder that this is a big timber district. Besides that of having a good fresh fruit display during the coming sum mer an attempt Is to be made to re new the processed fruit display. Tlui display now in the exhibit room was processed in ID I I, was shipped to the Panama-Pacific International exposi tion where it was on exhibit for an entire year and then shipped back to .Medford. Due to tho long exposure of this fruit to tho high light, it has faded and in some instances Is hardly recognized on account of its loss of its original color. This fruit was processed by H. O. Frohbach and if a suitable basement wilh water connec tions can be found, he will process an entirely new display this summer. The Medford Chamber of Com merce has a great advantage over many organizations of this kind in that its officers are well located on tho main street of the city and at the same time are close to the railroad where tho traveling public may see what the country around Medford produces and where by keeping the exhibit rooms iu pet feet order, they receive the impression of the com munity being exceedingly progres sive. The exhibit building is owned by the Medford Chamber of Commerce and is located on leased ground for which there is a very nominal rent being paid. Tho saving of' rent by this organization is an item of ex pense which reduces the overhead ex pense to a minimum and many Cham bers of Commerce are compelled to pay a large sum of their funds for this purpose. There are several other items of overhead expenses for which the chamber has to pay nothing and thereby It permits its income to be entirely placed at tho disposal of the board of directors for actual operation.
