But the danger in tire coming primary is that souk; people will do so without knowing it. Take this college niillage tatfj'or example. Superfic ially a citizen might figure Umt ,y voting against the measure lie -would save the state $800,000 in taxes and thereby decrease his own. Hut will liclx . Obviously the 1.120 mill tax would be saved. This would save the average tax payer about enough to -buy a few good cigars. Hut let us examine the loss that would be. involved. The critical financial situation of the three educational institutions m this state, is not bunk. It is as if a familv of four in 19i:$, with an income of .fUOOO, had been iiiereas-'d to a iaiiuly ol ten in 1920, with an income of !)()). That what the increased attendance and reduced value of the dollar has done. .Figure it out to vourself what that means. Jf the millage tax fails, the educational institutions will probably not close their doors, but it is an undeniable fact that a majority of the best professors and instructors will leave, it is also an undeniable fact, that at least one third of the students who now attend these institutions will have to go outside of the state for their education. What would this mean? The Oregon Voted lias givei' the answer: the state would HYe Smudge Pot Hf 4rtfca, frT At a minimum expense of $800 n er year per student lose f I ,lil).00(J per n mi ii ni . Xf IIION .1 wan young a shilling was pretty hard to get ; for hours a-man went drilling, in pools of honest sweat, before he'd fairly earned it, and when he drew his tin; 'twas seldom that he burned it, or idly blew it in. At. Christinas time he'd holler and make some kopecks fly; and he would spend a dollar the Fourth day of July. And when the three-ring circus came lumbering to towii with grafts and fakes to work us, he'd haply blow a crown. Then, having had his riot, he to his work returned, and, slrickfly on the quiet, he pickled all he earned. And. when life's winter found him, it didn't find him broke'; he'd comforts all around him, and greenbacks in his poke. Hut now such sane enoeavor such sense we vainly seek; the Fourth is with us ever, and Christmas once.a week.
