TIIH FACT has boon established that milk and fresh vegetables are essential artieles of diet for the grow ing child. Scientific experiments show that any diet in which milk and fresh vegetables are eliminated will result in mal-iiutrition. Mal-nutrition means disease, disease nieaiits death and a weakened citizenship. The milk drive which is being conducted in Jackson count' this week, the fiist of a series throughout the state, is therefore a drive which deserves the support of every person interested in the public; welfare. A recent survey in Medford shows that one-third of the school children drink no milk at all. This is a deplorable condition. It constitutes a menace not only to the grow ing child, but to the community as a whole. Moreover, a milk drive means a drive against the high cost of living. For it is also a scientific fact that the essen tial food elements, the elements which nourish and ener gize, found in a quart of milk are greater than found in any other food, costing three and four times as much. In other words the child can not get. along without milk, while the adult can save money every day by introducing milk in the daily diet. This is not a drive for the benefit of milk dealers, al though of course the milk dealers will be benefitted. It if a drive for the benefit of our children, and the benefit 61 the community at largo. A greater consumption of milk and green vegetables, particularly in the spring and sum mer, will mean not only less disease and more health, but a better diet for less money.- VOTE FOR GOOD ROADS. JACKSON COUNTY faces the greatest era of prosperity in its historv. There mav be tenmornrv set hacks, but with irrigation and lumber mills assured, assuring in their turn greater productivity of the land and augmented pay rolls, better and better times are as certain, as anything can be in a somewhat uncertain world. It would seem then the last time in the world, to adopt a timid attitude toward good roads, particularly when those-good roads can be built largely by outside money. A vote for the county bond issue and a vote for the '4 per cent increase, which does not increase taxes, but merely gives Jackson County its share of funds already provided, must appeal to every resident who investigates the situa tion carefully, as a business opportunity which Jackson County shupiy can't afford to miss. Wsit Mason HOUSECLEANING I'D LIKE to be an Eskimo and in an igloo dwell, and eat fried ice and scrambled snow, and go outdoors and yell. The humble Eskimo is glad, we see him dant'e and sing; his womenfolk don't drive him mad by clean ing house each spring. He isn't driven out of doors to hunt for frozen grub, the while the' women scrub the floors there are no floors to scrub. He is not chased, to beat the band, from out the divers rooms, by dames with brooms and mops in hand there are no mops or brooms. Year after year he sits in peace, or lies upon his back, clothed in his wholesome film of grease, and no one cleans the shack. His treasured goods are not mislaid, as mine are, every year; and he can find his blubber spade, hits corkscrew and his spear. And if he spills a cataract of ashes on the floor, no woman reads the riot act, no female heart is sore. I'll go to join the Eskimo when next a vessel st arts, for I am tired of all the woe that cleaning house imparts. I'm tired of sitting on the stairs, oppressed by fantods three, bc eanse the couches and the chairs are hung upon a tree. IBffM you gain an , advantage. ThA Prnirle Schooner recalled in ain.i.D rtf thA A.irlv west, will always prove Interesting when considering the development ol our transporta tion facilities. Every once in a while this relic of transportation is brought to light in a modern way, ttnrl thiR wnu strikingly illustrated in a recent adaptation of a Republic motor truck operated by tne tungsten-Comet Mining Co., of Panaca, 'o.ii Thin comoany is situated seventeen miles from the nearest railroad and this condition brought about the need of solving the com pany's daily transportation require ments, both as to passengers and freight. Realizing that It was not practical tn lmvB a number of vehicles which would necessarily be Idle a part of tho time, the Tungsten-Comet .Min ing company installed, a 2-ton Re public truck with a type or body io ment their local conditions. A pas senger automobile tonneau seat was furnished for the driver and tor nib protection a roadster top was at tached. Over the body of the truck a canvas top was built along lines adapted from the old-fashioned prai rie schooner that traversed the wes tern plains fifty years ago. This unique vehicle is used to haul pas sengers and supplies from the rail road to the company's mine, as well as conveying express shipments of high grade concentrates which the company produces. Thn nresldnnt of the Tunpssten- O'omnt Mining company Is most en thusiastic over the utility ot tne ito publlc truck so employed and is a firm believer In the merits of motor transportation. Adv.
